Senate approves historic legislation to protect same-sex marriages

The Senate on Tuesday approved legislation to codify protections for lawful same-sex and interracial marriages, marking a historic win for Democrats anxious to secure the rights amid growing concern that a conservative Supreme Court majority could take them away.


The Respect for Marriage Act had been largely expected to pass after it earned essential support from 12 Republicans during a key test vote just before Thanksgiving, putting it on a glide path to President Joe Biden's desk later this month. The bill next heads to the House, which is expected to vote on it next week -- as early as Tuesday -- before Biden signs it.

Codifying same-sex marriage into federal law became a top priority for Democrats in light of the Supreme Court's decision in June to overrule its 1973 Roe v. Wade decision guaranteeing a constitutional right to abortion nationwide.

Thirty-six Republicans on Tuesday voted against the Respect for Marriage Act, a bill that would protect same-sex and interracial marriages in the United States.


Twelve Republicans voted in favor of the bill, which passed the Senate by a vote of 61-36. Among those who backed the measure was GOP Senator Rob Portman, whose views on gay marriage changed after his son came out as gay in 2013. The bill is now one step closer to becoming law as Democrats face their final few weeks as the dominant party in the House of Representatives after Republicans secured a majority in the midterm elections this month.

Man, it can be argued that Biden has had the most successful legislative agenda of any administration in half a century.

I am sure you happily spent the stimulus money Biden sent you, and soon you'll be driving on roads and bridges repaired and upgraded by Biden's infrastructure bill, and you'll be paying less for Rx drugs because of Biden's healthcare bill

I'll be happy if the demmycunt voters pay their fair share of federal income taxes........we both know that the 50% of Americans who pay zero income taxes are the majority of the idiots that put the Pasty Faced Pedophile in the Oval Office.....
