True, the nation caved to Hitler as a whole and this included the intellectual centers. A sentence from your link sums that up: "The traditional leadership of the German bar permitted itself to be replaced by newcomers, formerly far removed from the centers of power in professional institutions." In other words, cowardness prevailed in the end. It could happen here, I suppose. Hasn't yet but the mob, as they say, is at the gates and nothing symbolizes the mob more than Trump's rally crowds and that gathering at The Capitol on Jan. 6; even something as small as the incessant comments at this forum which say, in effect, that American elections can be trusted no longer.

The White Rose emerged from a group of students who attended the University of Munich. Hans Scholl, his sister Sophie, Christoph Probst, Willi Graf and a few other friends had spent their teens under Hitler’s rule. Most of them were members of the Hitler Youth, designed to breed party loyalty and spread Nazi ideals.
Then Hans, a medical student, was conscripted into the Army. He served on the Eastern Front as a medic. There he witnessed the abuse of Jewish laborers and heard rumors of the extermination of European Jews and Poles. He returned to Germany and spoke of his experiences to his friends. It was not enough to keep to one’s beliefs and ethical standards, he said. The time had come to act.
The students got their hands on a printing press and began to print pamphlets that encouraged resistance to the Nazis. "Do not forget that every nation deserves the government that it endures," they wrote. The society's work quickly spread to other cities, with some of its literature even showing up in Austria.
But the movement was doomed from the start. On February 18, 1943, Hans and Sophie were caught throwing leaflets from a balcony at the University of Munich. On February 22 the Scholls and Probst were tried before the infamous Roland Freisler and swiftly convicted of high treason. That afternoon they were decapitated by guillotine. Other members of the White Rose were executed and dozens were imprisoned.
The White Rose was active from 1942-1943, but the courage of its convictions has left a lasting mark. “We will not be silent,” the group wrote in its fourth leaflet. “We are your bad conscience.”
