President Joe Biden said zip about soaring inflation in his address Thursday night, but he offered a vast conflation as he outlined the supposed “MAGA extremist” threat to democracy. Indeed, he basically painted as anti-democratic everything that’s contrary to his own agenda.
Front and center, he charged: “MAGA forces are determined to take this country backwards — backwards to an America where there is no right to choose, no right to privacy, no right to contraception, no right to marry who you love. They promote authoritarian leaders, and they fan the flames of political violence that are a threat to our personal rights, to the pursuit of justice, to the rule of law, to the very soul of this country.”
Note how he equates a political stance against abortion with being anti-democratic. The Supreme Court’s recent decision on Roe v. Wade put the choice to the voters — the very definition of democracy. So are all voters who back an abortion ban authoritarian? Biden himself used to be against abortion. Guess he was against “the very soul of this country.”
Biden’s team laughably claimed this wasn’t going to be a political speech. The major television networks obviously saw through that farce and refused to carry it live. Of course, it was a political speech. Despite his weak claims otherwise (“I don’t mean EVERY Republican”), Biden’s point was clear. Most Republicans support Trump, and if you support Trump, you’re a fascist. Sorry, “semi”-fascist.
And even if you don’t support Trump but hold certain conservative political beliefs, you’re anti-democratic.
