A teacher friend of mine told me his school just hired a teacher who does not have a 4 year degree, he said she does not understand the very basics of Algebra, but is going to be teaching it. She came to him with the webpages she will be teaching from and had to get him to explain the first couple units to her.

I did not believe it, I had to look it up.


We are really going into the toilet to pay for tax cuts.

anytime I interview for a networking job, i'm quizzed on my knowledge and I pass 98% of the time. This is all without a college degree. One can effectively teach students without a college degree as well, provided they at least have an understanding of the curriculum.

It says they must pass the subject area exam in the subject---exams must be pretty easy. Most math teachers in the U. S. are not certified to teach it. They use it to get a job until there is an opening in their subject area.

I doubt if tax cuts have much to do with it--teacher shortages exist everywhere. In my area districts are losing teachers to other districts that have adopted a four day week.

The rest of the world is trying to get more educated teachers, and many parts of America are trying to get less educated teachers. We are getting teachers without college educations, and classes being taught by teachers aids who dropped out of high school.

Ah yes, more of the QOP's War on Education. See, the kids won't learn jack shit, the parents will get angry, then they'll declare that public education isn't working so we're going to all vouchers, private schools, and charters. And guess what? Public education *will* fail because the funding will be cut even more.

you mean the OP that intimates that one cannot be a teacher unless they go to college? as if going to college makes someone better than those that don't? I think I understood that stupidity very well, which is why I pointed out the obvious..............why aren't you capable of understanding it?

Meh. I've had that happen with college teachers WITH degrees.

Quite right. A degree is no guarantee of an understanding of the material these days.
