the assault weapons ban never claimed to be a panacea to eliminate all gun violence.

The 1994 assault weapons ban reduced mass shootings by 48 percent. When Republicans refused to reauthorize the ban in 2004, mass shootings subsequently shot up 238 percent. I can't confirm those numbers, they come from a congresswoman.

If you need a weapon to defend your property, a shotgun, 357 Magnum, or 9mm pistol serve perfectly well.

Shooting is a fun sport. Millions of gun owners do it safely at ranges and in competitions. Defending your property? Use what you're most comfortable and accurate with.

You don't have a constitutional right to semi automatic assault weapons and high capacity ammo clips.

I think it would be fun to shoot Stinger missiles, but I don't have the hubris to think I have a right to do anything I think is fun.
 
The 1994 assault weapons ban did not work "the ban was associated with a 0.1% reduction in total firearm homicide fatalities due to the reduction in mass-shootings' contribution to total homicides." That isn't even statistically relevant. Getting rid of the .38 revolver would reduce firearm deaths more than banning "assault weapons". The latest FBI data shows the us has about 400 deaths a year BY ALL RIFLES. People want to eliminate "assault weapons" because they look scary.
