Kissinger: Ukraine must give Russia territory

Henry Kissinger has urged the West to stop trying to inflict a crushing defeat on Russian forces in Ukraine, warning that it would have disastrous consequences for the long term stability of Europe.

The former US secretary of state and architect of the Cold War rapprochement between the US and China told a gathering in Davos that it would be fatal for the West to get swept up in the mood of the moment and forget the proper place of Russia in the European balance of power.

Dr Kissinger said the war must not be allowed to drag on for much longer, and came close to calling on the West to bully Ukraine into accepting negotiations on terms that fall very far short of its current war aims.

“Negotiations need to begin in the next two months before it creates upheavals and tensions that will not be easily overcome. Ideally, the dividing line should be a return to the status quo ante. Pursuing the war beyond that point would not be about the freedom of Ukraine, but a new war against Russia itself,” he said.

He told the World Economic Forum that Russia had been an essential part of Europe for 400 years and had been the guarantor of the European balance of power structure at critical times. European leaders should not lose sight of the longer term relationship, and nor should they risk pushing Russia into a permanent alliance with China.

“I hope the Ukrainians will match the heroism they have shown with wisdom,” he said, adding with his famous sense of realpolitik that the proper role for the country is to be a neutral buffer state rather than the frontier of Europe.

Now it war against Russia itself. more money we dont have drawing down weapons we should be using
( and not buying) for the Pacific since Biden wants to go to war against China if they go after Taiwan

Eastern Europe is of absolutely NO IMPORTANCE to the USA - let Europe do what they want,, not our war

Kissinger was always terrible at this, he should just go away. He thinks people are pawns, canon fodder. He’s a master of war.

I would not give Russia jack-shit! I want the U.S. to give Ukraine more advance weaponry?!!

Ukraine has asked for: M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) give it to them!

When you start a war, it should be costly as hell to the aggressor in men and material, not to mention the crippling sanctions too?!!

Pentagon says more high-tech weapons going to Ukraine

NATO the Ukraine and Taiwan, will survive Kissinger, you, TRUMP, and all his TRUMPTARDS!

What a Fucking hilarious and pleasant thought!

Xi supposedly has 2027 as the date for a Taiwan "unification"

And you think, should that happen, the world should just bury their head in the sand and watch.

You may want to consider the implications of a PRC-controlled Taiwan. Considering the geopolitical value of Taiwan is useful because doing so illuminates if or when the U.S. would consider Taiwan worth fighting for. Rather than having to consider a rear-area threat, a PRC-controlled Taiwan would serve as a forward base, extending its aircraft and missile ranges another 150 nautical miles (nm) to the east. This would enable PRC interdiction of air and sea routes in the East China Sea and increase China’s ability to strike at targets in Japan or Guam. Conversely, U.S. and allied forces would be pushed further afield, with their bases under even greater threat of PRC missile or aircraft attack. However, while Taiwan offers a platform to project power onto the Chinese mainland, placing forces on the island makes them exceedingly vulnerable absent aerospace dominance.

Economically, taking Taiwan would give Beijing control over its fifth-largest trading partner. Beijing would also gain access to its high-tech industry, including world-class semiconductor factories, adding to its considerable industrial base. Though Taiwan’s impressive $600 billion GDP would fall under PRC control, the degree of cut largely depends on how Beijing gains the island. A mutual reconciliation may minimally affect GDP whereas conflict may curtail trade entirely.

That's an isolationist view. Just not how the world is these days.

If Putin succeeds, it's a threat to everyone. And don't reply "DA RUSSIANS!" You tried that sarcastically for a long time - and it turned out to be a real fear.

no it's not isolationism. the best you got is parroting a phrase?
NATO itself belies that mislabel

NATO expansionism and turning Ukraine into a defacto NATO state is the predicate for this war.

Kissinger is saying what I have been - Ukraine works best as a buffer state.
Biden wants it to be the "new frontier" of Europe - we are already warring against Russia
That ensures more hostilities/coldwar shenanigans

So said Neville Chamberlain in 1939

It's the "predicate" from Putin's perspective. Free countries can choose their own allies. Putin doesn't have a say.

US stated policy is to respect "one China" and not go to war over Taiwan

I'm quite aware that Taiwan is a keystone in the western pacific archipelago

Germany… Czechoslovakia… Lithuania… Poland. The prime minister was Neville Chamberlain of Britain. The aggressor was Adolf Hitler.

If the Ukraine surrenders territory, Putin will be emboldened, and look like a hero to Russians. They will do it again. When Czechoslovakia was forced to surrender the Sudetenland, the nation became unviable and broke up, becoming a German vassal. The Ukraine would be cut away until it, too, is unviable.

Putin said he wouldn’t invade… and did. It is more credible than not that Russia is committing atrocities.

An atrocious aggressor must not be appeased. We must learn from history, lest we be doomed to repeat it.
