Trump Supporters Explain Why They Believe the Big Lie

I personally believe the people who believe Trump's big lie are on the fringe?!!

For many of Trump’s voters, the belief that the election was stolen is not a fully formed thought. It’s more of an attitude, or a tribal pose.

Some 35 percent of Americans—including 68 percent of Republicans—believe the Big Lie, pushed relentlessly by former President Donald Trump and amplified by conservative media, that the 2020 presidential election was stolen. They think that Trump was the true victor and that he should still be in the White House today. I regularly host focus groups to better understand how voters are thinking about key political topics. Recently, I decided to find out why Trump 2020 voters hold so strongly to the Big Lie.

For many of Trump’s voters, the belief that the election was stolen is not a fully formed thought. It’s more of an attitude, or a tribal pose. They know something nefarious occurred but can’t easily explain how or why. What’s more, they’re mystified and sometimes angry that other people don’t feel the same.

As a woman from Wisconsin told me, “I can’t really put my finger on it, but something just doesn’t feel right.” A man from Pennsylvania said, “Something about it just didn’t seem right.” A man from Arizona said, “It didn’t smell right.”

The exact details of the story vary—was it Hugo Chávez who stole the election? Or the CIA? Or Italian defense contractors? Outlandish claims like these seem to have made this conspiracy theory more durable, not less. Regardless of plausibility, the more questions that are raised, the more mistrustful Trump voters are of the official results.

Perhaps that’s because the Big Lie has been part of their background noise for years.

Remember that Trump began spreading the notion that America’s elections were “rigged” in 2016—when he thought he would lose. Many Republicans firmly believed that the Democrats would steal an election if given the chance. When the 2020 election came and Trump did lose, his voters were ready to doubt the outcome.

It's a cult view. On this site, I've seen arguments related to crowd sizes & lawn signs. Completely unscientific.

They're just upset they lost. Most voters are when their guys loses - but most voters move on. Trump has allowed his base to continue w/ the fantasy because he won't concede and continues to insist they have "massive evidence."

Most of 'em just can't believe a lackluster candidate like Biden could beat Trump, who certainly does have charisma.

But they don't take into account how polarizing Trump was. His base loved him - but indies and Dems did not. People who never, ever voted turned out just to vote Trump out (thus the ballots that just had votes for President).

Many of them, maybe most, don't believe it. They only say they believe it to advance the purpose of something they do believe -that Trump, not Biden, should be President and for reasons so compelling they will disregard everything that stands in the way of him back in the WH. So the question isn't how can they be blind to the objective evidence of Trump's defeat at the polls but what accounts for this crazed dedication?

Congressman Jamie Raskin said yesterday that supporters of the Big Lie know Trump lost. They use it to justify bullying their way to install Trump as dictator.

Did he? He's not the first, but the question remains - One or more Presidential candidates lose every time. What is it about Trump's defeat that is different this time to the point of near revolution?

again - the reason people are skeptical is they saw firsthand how biased the media was in covering the election

lack of journalistic integrity is the biggest problem we face today - it sows so much distrust on all sides

That is like saying the reason is because all the sane people were biased against Trump.

Trump was...and still is...a disgusting turd...a cancer on the body politic of America. His continuing supporters should start out again in kindergarten.

What is the connection between your opinion about journalism and the election?

the media refused to cover the many many negatives of Biden.

if they treated him even half as bad as they treated Trump- his record turnout would of been lessened. I mean - one major review of how he lied and had to drop out of prior races because of those lies - an entire generation of young voters was purposefully ignorant of what a scum bag he has been his entire career. nope too busy with his ice cream flavors and treating him like friendly grandpa joe. a bit old- but a nice guy - bullshit. fucking senile as they come!

Biden has the dementia vote shored up - we get it Frank.

many of us were disgusted by both - and more would of been disgusted by Biden and sat out the election with fair coverage of the scum bag

Blaming the media is a fallback and ignorant. The national media covered the campaign with normal journalistic standards. Social media was all over place and fed one false claim and one dubious theory after another.
From what I've read and heard from the Trump crowd I doubt if many of them ever followed the main stream press. But they've bought, "it's the media's fault", hook line and sinker.

wrong. studied have shown how this was crazy bias. not just print media. the major networks. the debate organizations.

it also goes a long way in showing how such a loser got more votes than anyone else in history. media bias did that!

What studies?

I have online subscriptions to The NY Times, Washington Post, Hartford Courant and Richmond Times-Dispatch. I read them enough to know this is the same journalism I've known for thirty years, and once was a part of.
That's my study. Tell us about yours.

“studies have shown,” should we guess who did and presented those “studies?”

Many of them live under the Fox bubble, as I think “Z’s” post above shows, their understanding is totally defined from what they hear and see in the right wing media and on social media, they really don’t know any other reality. It confirms what they want to be true

Others are Republicans who have accepted the GOP as the Trump party, either thru a lack of courage or inconvenience, they can live with it, these are those that say “I don’t like Trump,” but I’ll vote for the GOP candidate

Rest are just part of the Cult of Trump, whether from hate, resentment, fear, or bitterness, they believe everything Trump says or does
