How Big Business Got Woke and Dumped Trump
...The group of 45 CEOs who assembled less than 12 hours later, at 7 a.m. on Nov. 6, represented nearly one-third of Fortune’s 100 largest companies: Walmart and Cowen Inc., Johnson & Johnson and Comcast, Blackstone Group and American Airlines. Disney’s Bob Iger rolled out of bed at 4 a.m. Pacific time to join, accompanied by a large mug of coffee. (Sonnenfeld, who promised the participants confidentiality, declined to disclose or confirm their names, but TIME spoke with more than a dozen people on the call, who confirmed their and others’ participation.)

The meeting began with a presentation from Sonnenfeld’s Yale colleague Timothy Snyder, the prominent historian of authoritarianism and author of On Tyranny. Snyder did not beat around the bush. What they were witnessing, he said, was the beginning of a coup attempt.

“I went through it point by point, in a methodical way,” recalls Snyder, who has never previously discussed the episode. “Historically speaking, democracies are usually overthrown from the inside, and it is very common for an election to be the trigger for a head of state or government to declare some kind of emergency in which the normal rules do not apply. This is a pattern we know, and the name for this is a coup d’état.” What was crucial, Snyder said, was for civil society to respond quickly and clearly. And business leaders, he noted, have been among the most important groups in determining whether such attempts succeeded in other countries. “If you are going to defeat a coup, you have to move right away,” he says. “The timing and the clarity of response are very, very important.”

No, 'big money' is bailing on Disney. Disney's stock has plunged 15% since January and is still falling...

Republicans are currently trying to go down two diametrically opposed paths simultaneously. They are trying to be "free speech martyrs" when it comes to private companies screening out material they think is disinformation, yet at the same time they're trying to make partisan use of the power of government to punish those who had the temerity to speak negatively about Republican policies.

When you're masterminding a scheme to use government power to intimidate into silence those who disagree with your policies, you're in no position to pose as someone who cares about free speech. What's going on with Florida attacking Disney fits much more closely with the traditional definition of censorship than private companies screening what kind of content they'll host.

Some Republicans stand for Free Speech but as DeSantis is proving, not all. After Trump, the Republican Party continues to move away from big business.

Agreed on censorship.

The whole reason Disney is taking this stance is it’s good for business

They employ and sell product to people who are gay and or love a gay person

Gay comes in all families

Even right wing scum families

They just pretend not to be gay

The bill now heads to the governor's desk

The move could have huge tax implications for Disney, whose series of theme parks have transformed Orlando into one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations, and serves to further sour the relationship between the Republican-led government and a major political player in the state.

The special status, known as The Reedy Creek Improvement Act, was signed into law in May 1967 by Gov. Claude Kirk in response to lobbying efforts by Disney. The entertainment giant proposed building a recreation-oriented development on 25,000 acres of property in a remote area of Central Florida's Orange and Osceola counties, which consisted of 38.5 square miles of largely uninhabited pasture and swampland.

Orange and Osceola County did not have the services or resources needed to bring the project to life, so the state legislature worked with Disney to establish the Reedy Creek Improvement District, a special taxing district that allows the company to act with the same authority and responsibility as a county government.

As, usual, Republicans shoot their voters in the foot in order for them to wage their childish culture war. Republicans are all closeted homosexuals anyway, you know that!
