Yes, Russia has worked for centuries to keep the snake handlers out, because like the old European monarchies they have a State church they grant hegemony to.

The American snake handlers are less than two hundred years old as a Christian denomination. The evangelical televangelists are a modern creation of charlatans invoking the prosperity gospel.

The Eastern Orthodox church traces back to the very beginning of Christianity in the Eastern Roman and Byzantine empire.

Moral of the story: the American snake handlers do not get to protest that Russia is not a Christian nation, nor that they aren't the right kind of christians.

First, it's a law, not rewriting the Russian Constitution.

Second, it doesn't ban Christianity. It makes it illegal to proselytize outside of church, among other things. IMO, it effectively makes Russian Orthodox the state religion.

I can't say that barring snake handlers is necessarily a terrible idea, but on the flipside Patriarch Kirill is as corrupt as they come. It is widely believed he was a KGB agent in the Soviet era, and he is obviously a pawn of Putin now. It's the main reason the Orthodox Church of North America and the Orthodox Church of Ukraine divorced themselves from the Moscow Metropolitan.
 
Want to get people to fight and die for the ruling class, hook it to religion. The guarantee of a happy afterlife and gods blessing the wars drive many religious people to kill for their country. Muslims toss a couple of 6 packs of virgins into their offers. Religion is bad for society. It determines via ancient books what should be taught and discussed in a modern nation. It installs religious belief as more credible than science and medicine.
Atheists are peaceful compared to religious people who are driven by a religious fervor.

I would say in the last 200 years, the root causes of most conflict zones and civil wars are imperialism, capitalism, fascism, and communism.
 
We have a First Amendment and This is what we are supposed to be doing with Government:
