The U.S. and allies will work together to transfer Soviet-made tanks to Ukrainian forces for the first time since Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, The New York Times reported Friday.

A U.S. official told the Times the tanks will enable Ukraine's military to conduct long-range artillery strikes on Russian forces in eastern Ukraine, suggesting that self-propelled artillery vehicles — which bear some resemblance to tanks — are also being sent.

The official was unable to say how many tanks were being sent or which allies would be providing them. Ukrainian troops already know how to operate Soviet-made vehicles.

A $300 million military aid package the U.S. announced Friday also includes "armored off-road vehicles" for Ukraine's military, NBC News reported.

I would also give Ukraine some French,
Exocet anti-ship missiles, to defend Odessa too!

Exocet anti-ship missiles missile whose various versions can be launched from surface vessels, submarines, helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft.

I wonder how long they will last?
I thought the same thing. I don't think these will be on the front lines. It sounds like they can now return long range fire against Russian positions.

I wondered why Ukraine wasn't just using some of the tanks/ammo that the Russians were leaving behind?

'Tanks' seem to be hard targets. Ripe for Missile attacks. There must be some strategy?

Here’s the list of billions in military equipment the US left behind for the Taliban

This reportedly includes up to 22,174 Humvee vehicles, nearly 1,000 armored vehicles, 64,363 machine guns, and 42,000 pick-up trucks and SUVs. So, too, the list of allegedly abandoned weaponry includes up to 358,530 assault rifles, 126,295 pistols, and nearly 200 artillery units. Oh, and the Taliban will likely inherit state-of-the-art military helicopters, warplanes, and other aircraft from the US, too.

The Ukrainians know how to operate and maintain these tanks, T 62 & T 64 have 115mm and 125mm main gun and the T 72 has a 125mm gun, they have no experience with American, German, or British tanks, with the soviet era tanks no training needed?!! all of these tanks are still in service around the world too!

Swell. How easy are they to pick off from Russian bases in Russia or Russian ships in the Black Sea?
As far as I can see, these are 'sitting ducks'. Maybe the Strategy is making Russia spend a million dollar missile to knock out a quarter million dollar tank?

I can see the Drone Warfare being pretty effective.

The real problem is that the crews and officers directing them aren't properly trained in tactics to deal with ATGM's and the situation they are being used in in Ukraine.

That is sickening. Armored Humvees that people donated money for the steel to armor them. Biden just let go.

We will have no secrets from our enemies because all the battle tech is right there to be reverse-engineered.

Auto-Vulcans, Drone technology..bomb robots..communications..all of it he let fall into enemies' hands.

I bet China and Russia already bought samples of everything. From The Taliban.

Probably battle tactics manuals, too.

The army loves their manuals. No one ever counted on having a shitbag in Chief.

Big deal.

They make ZERO mention of which models, how many of each, if they are upgraded and how.

Are they T-54/55's (which are almost useless - which were originally designed during WW2)?
T-62's - not much better?
Or T-72's - useful - depending on the model and the upgrades.

This sounds like nothing but PR bullshit to make NATO look 'generous'.
