As we now know, this was due to Trump essentially doing Putin's work for him in weakening NATO, and weakening American democracy.
Zelenski is doing what he thinks he needs to do. we should be thinking what's best for our security needs

Putin was waiting for Trump's 2nd term when there would be no constraints on Trump in having to face reelection.
Trump could have (and almost certainly would have) stood aside and held the door open for Putin with zero response from the US and there would have been nothing anyone could have done.
Probably planned it well before 2016.
Which is why Putin tried so hard to help Trump get elected.
If you're too blind to see that it's probably because you've got your head shoved too far up Trump's ass.
