We barely make any investment in green right now. People just want more accelerated development.

As a matter of fact, because of the raspy environment in space, the lifespan of some currently launched solar panels in space is significantly shorter compared to those placed on the earth’s surface.

Another thing is the wireless power transmission which is transmitted via electromagnetic waves at high transfer efficiencies. To remain in a safe condition, the satellite must require a huge receiver rectenna. Aside from that, one of its challenges is the launching, development and maintenance costs, which is highly expensive.

It doesnt provide a stable power supply, the storage problems are unworkable
and the turbines create their own ecological nightmares

you can use it locally in some fashion but not on a mas scale to replace fossile fuels

I mean, you're just talking about current technology.

People in the '70's said the same thing about computers - they used to fill 2 rooms, and people said that they could "never" be made small enough for personal use.

You're not talking about physics anymore. You're just talking about what we can't do TODAY. That's why the whole "it will never be viable" argument is so flawed.

Energy storage is what homes with solar energy do. That technology and the panel technology keeps improving. But rightys reject that because it does not suit their narrative.

I bring up computers a lot, but these same debates were going on in the '70's about computers ever having a practical use for individuals.

There really isn't a "can't" with technology. We can go back through all of human history. When we want to do something & we set our minds to it, it happens. And technological advancement is exponential.

I am not saying renewable sources are the ONLY answer.
But I see no reason why they should not be utilized to their fullest potential.
And I also see no reason why - eventually - coal/oil and gas powered plants cannot be a thing of the past.

That's like saying we shouldn't invest in computers in the 1970's, and referencing Chinese bean counters from thousands of years ago.
 
Why Tom's article is a fail whale.

Selecting just two alternative sources could certainly fail, but why would we avoid hydro-electric, solar thermal, geo-thermal bio-fuel and new clean nuclear?
Also the insane pronouncement that the entire country is both dark and totally calm at the same time is nuts.

The difference, imbecile, was that the government didn't pass laws to phase out horses before there were enough roads and fuel to handle the transition.
