Russian forces have taken control of the city of Kherson, the Russian army claims, in what would be the first city of significance to fall to Vladimir Putin's invasion.

"The Russian divisions of the armed forces have taken the regional centre of Kherson under full control," Igor Konashenkov, a defence ministry spokesman, said in televised remarks.

Kherson is a Black Sea port city located in Ukraine's south, close to Russian-annexed Crimea.

In other news, the Finnish parliament is to discuss joining NATO. A majority of Finns now support NATO membership for the first time ever. I wonder why?

No sane person on the left or right thinks this is great news.

Finland and other countries should join NATO or be eaten by the Russian bear.

I understand clearly that Russia has taken some obscure cities in the Ukraine.

Kiev is not an obscure city and it will fall very soon.

Irony is in the eye of the beholder.

Stopped Putin "liberating" the Baltics. He conducted a major cyberattack on Latvia a few years ago. Do you doubt he would have gone further if they were not NATO members?

No doubt they are "run by Nazis" and need "demilitarizing" (that's irony, Earl).
