Why democracies need a loyal opposition

America is now in fascism’s legal phase

The contemporary American fascist movement is led by oligarchical interests for whom the public good is an impediment, such as those in the hydrocarbon business, as well as a social, political, and religious movement with roots in the Confederacy. As in all fascist movements, these forces have found a popular leader unconstrained by the rules of democracy, this time in the figure of Donald Trump.

“A pluralistic democratic order… is based on a distinction between ‘enemy’ and ‘adversary’. It requires that, within the context of the political community, the opponent should be considered not as an enemy to be destroyed, but as an adversary whose existence is legitimate and must be tolerated.”

The re-emergence of the “strong man” in democratic politics, meanwhile – Donald Trump, Jair Bolsonaro, Narendra Modi, Viktor Orbán, Recep Tayyip Erdogan – has gone hand in hand with the demonisation and ridicule of political opponents.

In the Leftist world of today's Democrats, this means the "loyal opposition" says they object to what the Left is doing and when told by the Left to STFU they obediently do so and the Left continues on as if the "loyal opposition" doesn't exist...

this theory worked pretty well in in the 1780s but shortly after Geo Washington handed over the reigns of government the true nature of politics started taking over.

The pursuit of power by means of a great big pocketbook.

The evolution this thread complains of kick started with the Great Society when vote buying became the driving force.

It will be interesting to see how this resolves as we are on a collision path with a seismic change in direction.

Okay, what does that have to do with the idea of a loyal opposition?
