Every time we think we’re getting our heads wrapped around it, more changes or exceptions seem to appear. The latest is being hailed by representatives of the trucking industry as “a huge victory” because the Department of Labor has now decided that most truckers will not fall under the mandate. And if they do, they will have the option of submitting weekly negative COVID tests instead of getting the shot if they wish. So what makes truck drivers so special?

But the driver shortage has been growing for years, it part because we are told constantly that the profession will be over in a few years because of automation.

The Joke administration has started a mandatory registry of all truck drivers employed by any trucking firm that includes all cases of tickets, DUI, failed drug tests, accidents, etc., they may have ever had no matter how long ago. It has been picked up on by insurers and is being used to jack rates on those companies that hire more iffy drivers and has resulted in mass firings and refusals to hire such drivers as a result. It is now creating a huge driver shortage.

Not true. The vehicle just has to be autonomous in operation. That is, if it isn't linked to a network and has no outside data connection in operation, it can't be hacked.

But self-driving vehicles cannot be autonomous. Not now anyway.

The problem is that you have say, a truck driver that got a DUI while driving another vehicle say 8 years prior. That goes on the registry, and is then sufficient evidence for insurers to jack a company's rate some for hiring this person even though that's their single violation.
