We tend to assume that because we have easy access to Trader Joe everyone else does too.

Good point. The small community I grew up in was lucky to have a large chain store come to town. I think it was because we were right in the middle of highway 83 and had the largest feed lot in Western KS.

I started going through the list. Looked at the fattest 20 so far.

They all look like rural Republican counties.

I thought country folk had to physically work harder.

What gives?

Good point. The small community I grew up in was lucky to have a large chain store come to town. I think it was because we were right in the middle of highway 83 and had the largest feed lot in Western KS.

I think I crossed that hwy 83 when riding the bike out west just past Dodge City I think, maybe Garden City, enjoyed the ride, hated the wind in KS

if there is something going on and the place is packed, there is a smaller town going west on I-26 called Summerville, they have some good places there too. There is also a dock with a restaurant at Folly Beach but the name escapes me, it is pretty good too

What an interesting background you have, small town western Kansas. I grew up a city boy, and there was never any question about access to top quality grocery stores, and kind of retail store you wanted, and choice of dozens of movie theaters.

If you ever happen to take the back roads in the south, I mean really out there, you'll have no questions in your mind
why they overachieve on unhealthy. There are still lots of enclaves spotted throughout the south where I would not trust the water,
they probably eat possum and the roads are all dirt. Healthy living? They'd think you were deranged to talk about that.

There waa UN commission studying poverty in USA a couple years ago, and the take away message was that rural southern American poverty has no parallels in western Europe, and is not far from being on a par with poverty they studied in some developing countries.

I think the simplest answer is that we are willing to tolerate poverty in a way that Germany, Netherlands, France do not.

Not that I know of. Many affluent people actually joined the military of their own volition during periods like WW 2. For example George Welsh, heir to the Welsh grape jelly etc., fortune volunteered and became a pilot, eventually being an ace in the Pacific. He was one of the few pilots during the Pearl Harbor attack that got airborne and shot down several Japanese planes.
Al Gore volunteered during the Vietnam era and became a journalist in the Army seeing no combat.
Many movie stars of the WW II and Korea era volunteered or were drafted. Interestingly, John Wayne got a number of deferments due to having children and other exemptions.
Teddy Roosevelt volunteered.

I think today most celebrities would go the Trump route if there were a draft.

Trump is more of an anomaly. I can't find any reference online to Limbaugh ever being drafted so I doubt that one.

I'm curious about that myself. My first reaction is long-term aftermath of Yankee "Restoration". Maybe one reason the US didn't join our Euro allies in signing the Treaty of Versailles is that our nation already had 50 years of experience on the results of condemning an entire section of the country as evil and forced to pay for the sins of their fathers?

Afterall, Sherman had no problem using "Scorched Earth" across the South, indiscriminately harming all in his way. A practice illegal by the Geneva Convention. Even today Liberals scorn the South and seek to treat anyone who's Southern as less-than-fit for proper society and academia.
