There is no "either/or proposition" in science. You have hypotheses and evidence. That's it.
You do realize you are speaking to a purported heath care professional who refuses to mask or vaccinate because he thinks they don't work, right?

"Health care professional" always seems to be a little too ornate to mean anything substantial. "Head of Records", "Operating Room supervisor". Those titles are specific enough to me a "professional". Claiming to be a "health care professional" brings to mind someone who uses a bucket and a mop as part of their duties. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Honest work is a good thing.
Here are two famous examples:
