I don't know if its in every corp now anymore than it already has been but I'm definitely aware of its reach.

Based on a few of the responses ITT I don't think people fully understand what cancel culture is. We seen people such as President Obama, Dave Chapelle, Bill Maher and others push back (to a degree) against it. I think people mistakenly believe cancel culture is nothing more that people wanting to be able to say the n-word with no negative repercussions. That's really just a straw man at this point.

I can almost understand to a point. White people, generally speaking, don't want/like to be called racist. So even if they disagree with certain elements of #BLM, CRT or Ibram Kendi and the anti-racism movement they are afraid to speak out for fear of being called a racist and ultimately cancelled. But ultimately that's not beneficial long-term to have the fear inherent that open dialogue and discussion can't be had.

I found what you are responding to interesting. The statement that because a person doesn't know anyone its happened too means its either 1) not true or 2) they associate with a higher level of people...

The softball response here are people like George Washington, Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt and FDR, Diane Feinstein etc. who got cancelled from SF schools. Now, you won't get an argument from me that many politicians are not high level people. But some of the named above did some amazing things. (And Barack Obama's name was floated as a possible new school name but there was pushback against that because he will likely be cancelled in the future based on some of his actions)

One area where cancel culture gets discussed a lot is on college campuses. Maybe this has never been the actual case, but in theory Universities are places where ideas are exchanged, discussed and debated. It's a place where, in theory, students are to be challenged and grow. But there is a palpable fear/concern among numerous University professors about the fear of being cancelled based on speaking in any way against the acceptable CRT/anti-racism movement. Now its possible many University professors are simply low character people. But for the sake of discussion lets say that isn't the case. The question then is is the ideology/movement of CRT and anti-racism more important than academic freedom and being able to speak freely and exchange ideas in the classroom? If one is all in on cancel culture then the former takes priority.

I don't think there ever was a time when everyone could magically speak or act freely..........

As an example on many, many topics there are a few schools, both of which you could entertain ideas/thought that would be totally acceptable in one & equally unacceptable in the other........

The only difference that I can ponder is in the past there was a greater variance of thought, having more than two or three simple schools of thought......

Given the voices/options we now have it is prb freer now than any time in history & yet ppl willing/driven/manipulated to choose between the two.......

Almost like a sad Greek tragedy where the gods turn one against another & manipulate events & outcomes for their own benefit..........

Admittedly my world is not academia so I’m not speaking from what I experience. I do listen to a number of podcasts of professors at some of the leading universities in the country and what they describe is occurring in their classrooms and on their campuses and there very much seems to be an attitude of go along with the prevailing racial views or else you might find yourself in an unfavorable position.
