when i was a yute here in texas, we were taught that the civil war was mainly about states rights, and slavery was not really mentioned or described. we were also taught the Civil War was also called the War of Northern Aggression!! i have read some of the stuff in that 1619 project, and i think it is mainly full of shit. our country was not founded on slavery, was not built on slavery, it was AFFLICTED BY ITS DISEASE and it took a great deadly civil war to end it.
but it is not any more inaccurate than the shit we were taught in texas back in the 50's and 60's.

Civil War history is actually pretty complicated—it’s get into economic considerations between the North and the South, for example. It doesn’t do the history justice to reduce it to ‘just slavery’ even though slavery was absolutely the pivotal reason for it. But if one doesn’t grasp the economics of slavery one doesn’t get a complete picture of it.

Also, even though states rights was not the pivotal reason for the war, its too often kicked to the side as if the issue wasn’t relevant to the people who fought in the war. For example, Devil Anse Hatfield fought for the South but if he had an opinion on slavery he kept it to himself. I think a lot of these people bore an allegiance to one side or the other for varied reasons—and not all of them are to be found in the history books.

There might have been some (little) racism in this country, but nothing like was started by that scumbag Kaeperdick.
