I still remain skeptical but give the person face-value credit until there's a reason to doubt their claims. BTW, a military dependent who spent 18 years living with a military parent would know all of those things.

I knew one online personality who was constantly chiming in with his opinions on military topics, especially the Marine Corps. It turns out his dad was career Marines and his two(?) brothers were Marines but he never joined.....and was never quite clear why. I suspected some youthful fuckup like drugs or joyriding rather than cowardice. He certainly loved living virtually as a Marine.

Overall, after several posts and a person's demeanor, I tend to agree that veterans can spot other retired veterans. The harder ones to spot are some asshole who did their four years and got out as fast as they could, but continue to claim military expertise for the next 40 years. Did they really serve or are they really Stolen Valor assholes? Hard to tell sometimes.
