If we pass each other in the store, you with your mask and me without, and I cough -- you will still get some of my water vapor and whatever it's carrying -- but not as much as you would have without the mask. If we both have masks on and I cough, you will get even less.

No one has ever claimed that they are 100% effective. But they are 100% more effective than no mask at all.
