I went through a private sector background check to work in essential finance. While it was created by the private sector, the FBI assisted. I really don't know all the details.

I do know that state bars are not decided by the FBI.

It's probably just fingerprints and a simple record check for convictions and warrants. I've had military background checks and those were coordinated with the FBI. After active duty I was hired as a AP high school teacher which required a routine FBI check, including fingerprints. After 9/11, since I couldn't come out of retirement, I joined the Civil Air Patrol. That also required fingerprints and an FBI check. I have a carry permit; that also requires fingerprints and an FBI. It's pretty routine. The FBI doesn't decide, they just report.

The real background checks for Secret and Top Secret clearance are done by the FBI and I guess Homeland Security as well. They talk to your family, ex-family, neighbors, ppl you went to school with years before. In the mid-80s I worked for a defense contractor in STL called McDonnell-Douglas. You may have heard of it. lol I was in the clerical dept. but even then we had to have secret/top secret clearances because we sometimes handled sensitive documents and data. After a couple of years I transferred to the missile plant west of the main facilities. We had to have a top secret clearance to work in that building; that's where they designed and built SLAM and Tomahawk missiles.

PmP does not seem to know much about how being a lawyer works. Not that I know much, but I do not claim to be a lawyer.

Somehow I doubt he is a real Christian either.

Now that sounds believable. I know I have had several criminal background checks, all of which came back clean, obviously. I have lived a boring life :-P

Cool jobs. That's the way I remember it for Secret and TS clearances. List several personal references too.

Except for the one year I spent TAD at Group HQ as Group classified material officer, a job that cured me of any staff officer desires, a Secret clearance when afloat and a Confidential on shore duty was all I ever had. The Group job was the one where I'd rather give up a few fingers than have to do again. The two benefits were flipping through the Top Secret attack plan for Nicaragua (it was over 5 inches thick) and reading the daily intel reports during the Falklands War. The action was pretty fast and fairly constant. Three days later it was all in the LA Times...well, most of it. :)

So Trump obviously wasn't joking and you know this, but let's just say he was. After he said this, his audience cheered. There's no way that none of those people didn't believed he was 100% serious. This is why a president shouldn't talk like this, whether joking or not. If Obama had said this, you would have rightly condemned him for talking like a dictator. But because it's a Republican, you make excuses.
