the speech

was too long and repetitive

unusual for him

otherwise ok, but there was one point he could have stopped and it would have been really good

I think he wrote it himself.

I thought I was the only one that was somewhat disappointed by it, not because his political views are different than mine but because I was again expecting something truly moving and got a relatively well-delivered normal fare.

It was definitely better than what we've had the past 8 years though.

I was not overly impressed with the text of the speech. OK but not great.
I guess I should have listened to his delivery of it, perhaps I would have had a different take on it.

To be fair to Obamas the sombre tone of his speech was probably meant to reflect just how bad of a mess he's found himself in.

The wave of optimism that he rode into office on is a little more problematic now that people actually expect him to solve all those problems. He could be the most brilliant workaholic President the world has ever seen but that's just not going to happen.

Like when are we really going to get troops out of the ME? What can we really do to help this financial mess. Yep, he has lot of things to try to "fix" but I think he will do some good in some areas overall.

The great documenty genious Ken Burns rated the speach an 11 out of ten.

I thought it was wonderful and cried through parts of it.

The tone was a bit subdued but like Charver said its a time for serious reflection on the mountain before us.

Lets get to climbing.

I bet it was disappointing that he didn't talk about Israel's right to defend itself by killing babies.
Shame there. What a missed opportunity! He could have added how killing babies is a right in the US, it is just somewhat "extended" in Israel.

;)

Giving geat speeches is Obama's best quality .. but he didn't have to deliver a great speech yesterday, everybody has already been hoodwinked.

I find it absolutely amazing how many Obama supporters don't know his history.

he is not bush, that is his greatest quality and is what obama ran on and won on...

Hillary Clinton was not Bush .. as was Biden, Richardson, and every other democrat.

Not being Bush didn't put him in a position to win or even run.

Giving good speeches did.

are you telling me that one of obama's main themes was NOT "same" with mccain, "not another 4 years?" he said it multiple times in debates and in the media. his campaign also stated it numerous times. and virtually every dem who was defending him after the nom stated....not another four years of mcsame or whatever. it was the main theme of his campaign.

dude...come on

just one example:

LOL

Well my virtuoso garbageman said that it was pretty mediocre, and he has an IQ of 180.

How does Ken Burns have any particular credibility evaluating speeches? You might as well take Battleborne's opinion.

I've not read through the comments other than E's garbage man and the quoted bit by evince. I thought it a downer, not at all what I expected or had told my students to watch for. I thought it would be on possibilities, responsibility, and service.

For reasons I understand, it was mostly about lowering expectations with some hope in a time to come. He was surprisingly strong about defense, but we'll see where it takes us.

I really was expecting, (lowering expectations), a speech that would be quotable for the ages, not what we got.

that last comment was like shooting fish in a barrel

iraq - yes

afghanistan - not for a while

overall, i think he will pare back the pentagon's role in things

also, lets not use hummers as armored vehicles - we have viable armored personal carriers - why are we not using more of them

also, he was and is better organized than his competition

i think that he may be more of a moderate than his supporters thought

in any case, he will need enough time to fix things - but will his supporters give him that time
