Correct about JPP. As for Earl, he rose up the ranks of the Air Force and left as a Captain after 10+ years(?). Since no officer I've known has been far smarter and more sophisticated than Earl, I suspect a physical brain or mental health issue.
You'll find a direct correlation between poor mental health or brain damage and political extremism on this forum. Most are RWers, but a few are LWers. I think, besides brain issues that age is a factor in people becoming more Right Winged versus Left Winged. Young people tend to be strong and idealistic and older people tend to be weaker and more afraid. The fear is, in part, because they have more to lose but also because they fear change. Fear of the Unknown is the greatest fear of all - younger people are more adaptable but older people are more inflexible so change is good for the former and bad for the latter.
