Face Masks Really Do Matter. The Scientific Evidence Is Growing.

That does not fit. Freedom is not about wearing masks to slow down a pandemic. What gives you the right to possibly make other people sick? I missed that in the Constitution.

Perhaps you can show were it says in the Constitution anyone has to protect each other from viral breakouts. I must have missed that.

I stand STRONGLY with the motto "live free or die".

Well, Emperor Fauci is encouraging governors to get Nazi with it.

They’re mandated here in WV for public places and I comply. The ones I use [the ones most people use] leak air around the sides and the nose. Even if you pinch it, it doesn’t adhere to the bridge of the nose. So, you can feel the air rushing in from the sides.

Air, that has whatever COVID that’s in the air. Same thing when you exhale: forced air will follow the path of least resistance. Ask any HVAC guy—it’s a basic engineering principle.

Then the mask, itself, becomes a potential vector for transmission.

Basically, if someone is going to sneeze in my face—I prefer we both had masks on. Walking around Wally World—-I see that as pointless. But I do it.

None of those masks people are wearing would pass a fit test. You are right. The WHO and CDC are still debating if this virus is aerosolized or not.

Adapt your engineering principles with that fact that it is the droplets that carry the virus. Those are factually stopped with a mask, both from being expelled or breathed in.https://www.livescience.com/face-mask-visualization-droplets-covid-19.html You rightys have not invented new arguments. The first things they tested were the efficiency of masks. They work.

There are no plans to ever allow society to return to mask free environments. I will live mask free as long as I am free. The only exceptions I make are when a business requires masks for entry, AND a human enforces the policy. I won't ever unload on business owners or employees, I just smile and comply or go elsewhere.

If/when it starts to get ridiculous, I’ll rebel. But I play along for now.

Face masks are emerging as one of the most powerful weapons to fight the novel coronavirus, with growing evidence that facial coverings help prevent transmission—even if an infected wearer is in close contact with others.

I can't read the entire article that you linked, only the first couple sentences. It says I have to subscribe. If you can post the entire article here, I will read the whole thing. It is only fair that I read the article if I am commenting on your thread.

From the title and first few sentences that I could access, I was a little pessimistic about "the scientific evidence is growing", since it kinda sounds like it must not be grown. Sounds a little fishy, but I haven't read the rest of the article. Also, I saw

"New research suggests that face coverings help reduce the transmission of droplets,..."

"Help reduce" sounds a long way from "stops transmission". "Reduce" is kinda sketchy compared to "stops", and "help reduce" sounds even sketchier than just "reduce".

The fallacy here is "wearing masks to slow down a pandemic". Masks are being mandated to crush the economy.

Why? How can you believe crazy things like that? Do other people not exist in the economy? Would they not be hurting themselves. You really have not thought that through.

Here’s the Science Behind How Face Masks Prevent Coronavirus

One category of evidence comes from laboratory studies of respiratory droplets and the ability of various masks to block them. An experiment using high-speed video found that hundreds of droplets ranging from 20 to 500 micrometers were generated when saying a simple phrase, but that nearly all these droplets were blocked when the mouth was covered by a damp washcloth. Another study of people who had influenza or the common cold found that wearing a surgical mask significantly reduced the amount of these respiratory viruses emitted in droplets and aerosols.

But the strongest evidence in favor of masks come from studies of real-world scenarios. “The most important thing are the epidemiologic data,” said Rutherford. Because it would be unethical to assign people to not wear a mask during a pandemic, the epidemiological evidence has come from so-called “experiments of nature.”

A recent study published in Health Affairs, for example, compared the COVID-19 growth rate before and after mask mandates in 15 states and the District of Columbia. It found that mask mandates led to a slowdown in daily COVID-19 growth rate, which became more apparent over time. The first five days after a mandate, the daily growth rate slowed by 0.9 percentage-points compared to the five days prior to the mandate; at three weeks, the daily growth rate had slowed by 2 percentage-points.

Another study looked at coronavirus deaths across 198 countries and found that those with cultural norms or government policies favoring mask-wearing had lower death rates.

So far, just a single non coronavirus specific experiment that suggests a wet wash cloth blocks a portion of droplets. I haven't seen people wearing wet washcloths...

The second evidence I see here is that there is 1% or so reduction in the growth rate in the 5 days following a mandate. Does 1% enough to exclude margin of error?

Another study looked at coronavirus deaths across 198 countries and found that those with cultural norms or government policies favoring mask-wearing had lower death rates.

Do you honestly consider "another study" to be evidence of anything? C'mon...

2% decline in spread is almost nothing....certainly not enough to make masks worth the bother.

You are actually arguing against your claim that masks are a good idea.

They do not do anything if Covid is aerosolized. Try and google that then copy and paste something in your lame attempt to show you know something about this.

It isn't worth wasting your time with these wank-wits. Anybody denying that masks assist in preventing air-borne disease is a troll or designated coffin-fill.
Probably both.

I am familiar with the argument crafted by rightys and beaten down by scientists. it is not new and has been refuted. Rightys will conjure up crazy claims and then it becomes our job to fix the mistakes you guys make. The data shows clearly that masks work. So what does that say about aerosolized Corona? The experiments have shown how Corona is passed. The photography shows it. The statistics show it.

The masks people are wearing do not stop aerosols. At all. Feel free to look that up.
