The claims actually are that the crud of American conservatism were in the Democratic Party back in the mid-19th Century...and that Lincoln and the Republican Party represented opposition to them. Lincoln was despised by the Democrats of that day...despised by the racist Republicans.
Today, that scenario has changed. The Republican party is the party that appeals to the racists. If the people who hated Lincoln and who backed slavery, Jim Crow, and the confederacy lived today...they would be Republicans. And most would be supporters of the abomination, Trump.
