The Ten Greatest Things About Corona Virus...

Hello Phantasmal,

It’s a dark cloud, with a silver lining, meaning even in the darkest times you need to find something to be grateful for to keep your balance, otherwise the dark cloud googles you up. Positive thinking also helps keep your immune system in better shape.

Great point!

:)

Hello jacksonsprat22,

I don't need to pretend that massive deaths and an economic depression are nice. Sorry.

There is no pretending here. All of these things are real. I'm sorry you're unable to appreciate the 'silver lining' to this very dark cloud which has swept over us. I am positive if you think about it long enough, you can think of something good from this which would not have happened otherwise.

Hello jacksonsprat22,

I think this thread is a joke. Not participating.

Ahh, but to make a post saying one is not participating is an act of participation in itself.

If you're looking for dreary threads just click on nearly any other thread. Like most here, I participate in a lot of dreary threads. It just occurred to me that it's not actually all bad news. I thought the forum could use a positive thread for a change. Good news is kinda rare these days, eh?

I would like to see a total net number done. Value each life lost by covid-19, every dollar lost in economic terms, every dollar saved,
the value of all the hoarding cost and wasted products, the value of all the lessons learned, the saving based on that, the suffering averted,
etc etc. a giant God like neural network analysis. Answer? 42

Hello jacksonsprat22,

Pardon me, I was trying to be nice, which is a bit rare in this forum.

My PIP appears at the bottom of every post. It's in red. If you can't see it, I'll copy it here:

Personal Ignore Policy PIP: I like civil discourse. I will give you all the respect in the world if you respect me. Mouth off to me, or express overt racism, you will be PERMANENTLY Ignore Listed. Zero tolerance. No exceptions. I'll never read a word you write, even if quoted by another, nor respond to you, nor participate in your threads. ... Ignore the shallow. Cherish the thoughtful. Long Live Civil Discourse, Mutual Respect, and Good Debate! ps: Feel free to adopt my PIP. It works well.

Just put him on ignore. He seems to just be putting words in people's mouth, acting weirdly defensive in a whiney way, and wasting time here. Nothing good can come from it.

Nah, its 45.

It's easy to be overwhelmed by all the bad news. There's plenty of it.

So it never hurts to realize there are actually good things about the Corona virus. What could possibly be good about it, you say? Fair question. Turns out, there are some good things. Here's the 10 best things I have noticed about the Corona Virus:

10. Homes have never been cleaner. With all this time on our hands, people are cleaning more thoroughly and more frequently. Especially those often-touched surfaces! I don't know about you, but my doorknobs have never been so clean! And for once, we're all caught up on the laundry. Homemaking has reached a new level.

9. Gardening and the arts. More people have planted or are planning to plant gardens this year because now they finally have the time to do what they really feel like doing. Many are growing things to eat. Others are reacquainting themselves with their inner artist. It is a rare massive movement toward the arts. Bravo.

8. Eating better. Now that everyone is forced to buy food, bring it home and cook it, people are eating better than fast food. Especially if they are using whole foods instead of highly processed.

7. The political parties came together on some things!

6. Taking the time to call and say hello. People are spending more time kicking back and talking on the phone just for the fun of talking and staying in touch.

5. Cars washed, waxed and detailed. Lawns and grounds raked and manicured.

4. Resurgence in reading. People who never had time to read books are now finding the time. People are learning more. Humans are getting smarter.

3. All the incredibly selfless acts of kindness. Neighbors helping one another, and helping strangers. Some of the stories are touching.

2. Spending more time with loved ones. How much quality time do we normally get with the rest of the family? Got that covered now. For small children of young working parents this is fabulous. None of them are complaining that mom and dad are around for them any time of day. Board games never got so much use...

1. Cleaner skies, less pollution and less global warming:

"On Tuesday, LA saw some of the cleanest air of any major city in the world, according to IQAir, a Swiss air quality technology company which also monitors pollution levels in cities around the globe.

And beginning in early March of this year, EPA air quality data shows that the city of Angels experienced its longest stretch of "good" air quality since at least 1995.

Dr. Yifang Zhu, a professor of environmental health sciences at UCLA's Fielding School of Public Health, said that she and her colleagues identified a similar trend.
Between March 16 -- three days before California Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered the state's 40 million residents to stay home -- and April 6, Zhu's team found there was a 20% improvement in overall air quality in Southern California."

LA - With Clear Skies, No Smog - Amazing!

I bet if you think about it, you can think of other good stuff about this crisis. Any silver linings to your cloud?

Just trying to appreciate the simple things in life. You wouldn't believe how much reading and walking I have done. Bird watching is nearing the top of my list

I do not know if this is a good thing, but with my hair stylist out of commission, and my so reticent to cut my hair, I am planning to learn the ancient skill of the salad bowl haircut.

That's funny. Thanks for posting!

Been cutting my own hair for years. Never thought about how so many people must be getting long hair by now. Good point.

Self hair cut is easy because you have the advantage of time. There is no pressure to do it all at once, so you can go slow, do a little here, a little there.

Best to be done after showering, with wet hair.

Have opposing mirrors, so you can see the back. Learn to work in reverse view. Weird at first, but with practice no big deal.

Comb and gather a pinch, then clip the tip. Repeat.

Be conservative. Don't do too much when it's wet. You can always cut more later, but growing it back takes time.

When satisfied, or even suspect that's enough, stop. Dry it out, let it settle.

Come back later, check out results when dry and settled. Maybe make a few additional little trim cuts to take care of anything sticking out.

I also have a little dental scraping tool. Every few days or so, I'll very carefully try to scrape near the gum line in a region. Same kinda deal there with the luxury of time. Don't have to do the whole job at one sitting. I've gotten to the point I can do it while watching TV. I figured it's gonna be a long time till it's safe to go to the dentist for a cleaning, so I've made this a priority lately.

I think no more of summa these chores than I do of nail clipping or exercise. Or drinking water. Human body maintenance.

Water is a really good one. I made a rule: "Never ignore the urge to drink water." Most people don't drink enough water. Being slightly dehydrated leads to all kinds of problems. It's subtle, easy to miss. Could lead to unexplained headache. Sometimes just feeling a little blah or lack of energy can be alleviated by drinking more water. No excuses now, hanging out at the house so much, never far from the bathroom. It's nearly impossible to drink too much water. Keeps the metabolism right, makes all the body functions work better. That helps keep immune system strong. A good thing, these days.

Start every day off right on hydration. The rule is: "As soon as the feet touch the floor upon rising, drink a full glass of water." You'll want 7 more glasses during the day to have the full correct amount. Taper off a few hours before bed in order to make it through the night without having to interrupt sleep. Proper nutrition, exercise and hydration leads to good full night sleeping. Healthy sleep also promotes strong immune system.

Take care of yourself...

I am tempted to give myself a buzz cut, but I need to work up the nerve.

Exercise and enjoying the simple things in life is more important than ever. It is important to not stay cooped up. I do not understand the Neoconfederates who claim the government is keeping them on house arrest

It's the good news about Corona virus thread.

I am attempting to use my quarantine time to improve my mind.

I now have a good concept of what the standard model of particle physics is.

I have a pretty good idea of the legacy of the philosopher GWF Hegel.

I wrote a movie review for Scooby Doo: Monsters Unleashed (3 5 of 4 stars)
