"AUSTRALIA will join China in implementing mandatory censoring of the internet under plans put forward by the Federal Government.

The revelations emerge as US tech giants Google, Microsoft and Yahoo, and a coalition of human rights and other groups unveiled a code of conduct aimed at safeguarding online freedom of speech and privacy.

The government has declared it will not let internet users opt out of the proposed national internet filter. "

Well, if you read a little further, you can see it's designed to filter out child pornography & other adult content.

What do you think, Dano; do you think the television networks are over-regulated because they don't allow this kind of content?

There are many countries that catch child pornography without censorship.

And if you read even further they are already talking about censoring anorexia among other things in a list that is sure to keep expanding.
TV stations are limited and there are none that would ever show that.
Do you think if there was no regulations, there would be a TV station showing child porn? Of course not, it's still illegal and would take one viewer to complain and they would be out of business and arrested.

Yeah, you're right. That really keeps the internet free of it, and safe for people of all ages...

Notice they are joining China.
There is no internet censorship in most countries, just regular law enforcement, do you consider the problem rampant here?
Remember you are giving the government filtration over all, they will see anything you do, even accidental.
And they are already talking about expanding to anorexia and that list will only expand.

I see your argument and I don't doubt that you would catch more people this way and so I wouldn't be heartbroken if it went through but I just think there is more to lose by going down this road. Civil liberties are easily eroded and will be abused by ideologies who decide to add their issues to that filtration list.

I consider the internet to be a kind of Wild West right now. It's way too much of a free for all; I wouldn't trust kids to go on it for a second, even with parental control kinds of filters, which aren't always effective. I'm amazed at some of the stuff that comes up on even basic kinds of searches.

I don't know what the answer is, but keeping it as deregulated as possible is probably not it.

Yeah, we are bad to be aligned with China in the death penalty, but good to be aligned with it in Thought Police?

Labor is not a left-wing party.

ROFL! Yeah maybe not to a raging Socialist, to the rest of the world they are left-wing. I suppose they are trying to do their rebranding as center left like Labor in Britain, but that just means an abandonment of nationalization, the rest is solid left and when it comes to social welfare and the environment - hard left.

If they were still hard left they wouldn't be in the business of censorship, now would they?

Kind of a strawman, there.
Not really. This is a weak response to an embarrassing comparison.

We can also use Iran, NK, etc. Who also use the Death Penalty (bad thing to be aligned with them on) and national internet filtering (good thing according to some, bad according to others.)

I would be as uncomfortable with our nation doing this as I am with warrantless wiretapping.

I assume China has laws against murder & theft.

Are we "wrong" to be "aligned" with them on that?

You're turning more & more into the biggest waste of time on this board.

I kinda thought that was a main purpose of strawmen ?
