Mathews voted for Bush in 2000. He's not a "classic" liberal. At best, he's a reagan democrat, or a moderate independent.

As recently as the May 27 edition of Hardball, Matthews responded to documentary filmmaker Alexandra Pelosi's suggestion that members of the media -- including Matthews -- have portrayed President Bush as a "dunce" by asserting that he has voted for Bush "at least once" and that he has "defended [Bush] against the liberal elitists":

Lincoln Chaffe is a "lifelong republican", but I would hardly characterize him as a "classic conservative".
Face it: Mathews is an independent-thinking, centrist. His party registrations is probably still Democrat. Yet, He voted for bush, and implies he's vorted republican more than once.
