No, the former confederates are today's conservatives. The Dixiecrats split to the right, after civil rights, and racial integration. Dixiecrats were all for states rights. Now where have we heard that? The Dixiecrats were just a small group of Democrats that formed in opposition to civil rights. The were the States Rights Party. It was more with them being Southerners that carried that confederate mentality, than being Democrats. The moment the stuff went Down, most left to the Republicans, and others formed an independent party.

How so? The former Confederates were members of a political party that was classically liberal (Jefferson/Madison), then populist (Jackson/Bryan), and then leftist (Wilson). At what point were they conservative?
