I once had a religion class in which we took a verse in the Bible and completely took it apart and tried to examine it in historical context. We researched what else was going on at that time and what the people involved at the time would be thinking and doing and concentrating on. It was kinda fun at first, often you would get more insight when you realized the people in the Bible were spending most of their time trying to eat, but after weeks on a single verse it got very tedious.
