All this acclamation for Veterns, especially today, is beautiful,

Like I said I didn't serve so I can't speak all that deeply to all the issues it has (I mean I've read about it but just not something I'm real familiar with). I've heard the arguments for privatizing it. I'm just trying to better understand what changes have been or what changes people would like to see be made. For instance did Bush/Cheney do anything to improve it during their tenure?

I haven't even really dealt with Tricare, since all I've ever needed are my annual PHA and dental exam (just did my dental on Thursday morning). I've never even been to sick call.

Here's something else that the phony veterans' advocate didn't know - or didn't want you to know:

President Trump took one of his first steps to address chronic problems in the Department of Veterans Affairs by signing a bill that extends stopgap services for veterans to go outside the VA medical system for care.

After campaigning on the issue of improving substandard care for veterans that dogged President Obama, Trump signed a reauthorization of the Veterans Access, Choice and Accountability Act. “The veterans have poured out their sweat and blood and tears for this country, and it’s time that they are recognized. It’s time that we now take care of them, and take care of them properly,” Trump said.

The Choice program was set to expire in August without the legislation and with nearly $1 billion unspent in the account. Congress developed the program after a scandal erupted in 2014 during the Obama administration over wait times at the VA medical center in Phoenix, where dozens of veterans died waiting for care.

Another one, takes a national embarassment and turns it into a partisan political talking point, but I'm sure he'd be one of the first to echo "thank you" to show what a great "patriot" he is?

Really, anchovies?

Let me show the forum what Y O U posted in my non-political, non-partisan Veterans Day thread just a short time ago:

How many draft deferments did he get back when it was his turn? Oh, I forgot, shin splints, or was he the one with a boil on his ass?

I did not threadban anyone because I assumed (wrongly, in your case) that a desire to honor veterans would prevent a shit bag like you from polluting an otherwise nice tribute to our military.

So, when you profess a desire to help veterans (which you couldn't even bother to spell correctly), I am skeptical, anchovies.

You are scum.

The VA budget under Bush increased about 85% but by 2008 he was talking some cuts in an attempt to balanced the budget....Obama also claimed an 85% increase...
Politifact rates that as a half truth....guess it depends on who is doing the math.....
Personally, I think the VA was just mismanaged from the top....lack of oversight by those in charge more than money....

The Republican in me cringes when the argument is we increased the budget. I mean veterans deserve it completely but it just comes across as the argument for so many other gov't programs, "More money is the answer."

What you say about the management makes sense

The swamp fights back:

A notoriously corrupt Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) manager fired in the first day of President Donald Trump’s presidency — to rousing acclaim from veterans who heralded it as a sign of lasting reform — has been returned to work by VA officials after he filed a civil-service protections appeal.

The return of the Puerto Rico hospital director is the latest example of Trump’s reform efforts encountering the entrenchment of what he has called Washington’s swamp, and comes in the same month a court ruled that the VA may not even be able to fire the Phoenix hospital director, who is a convicted felon as a result of job-related misconduct.

To fix the VA is more than just "it's Democrats fault, it's Republican's fault". Has anything changed in the last 23 years (for the better)? What are we (Republicans) proposing now? The status quo with more money?

I've never been a republican. I'm a small gov't conservative. I"d label myself a moderate libertarian. I generally vote 3rd party, and for me, outsider Donald Trump was a third party candidate.

Nothing like twisting a distasteful reality into a partisan political talking point

Socialist politicize every aspect of human life. That's what socialism does. The PC Police are everywhere. Even at our NFL games to piss and shit on veterans and the flag.

I didn't serve and I haven't had to use the VA so I can't speak from experience but are the issues strictly a matter of money? it
You hit the nail on the head with that question.
You can throw an unlimited amount of money to the VA and it wouldn't help. The problem is the system, which is a gubmint system.
1. VA employees can't get fired unless maybe they commit murder.
2. The docs can't get sued for malpractice.
3. Docs get paid the same whether they see four pts. a day or 20. The VA. attracts lazy docs.

This is off the top of my head. I could come up with more but don't really care. Pfffffft!

I didn't serve and I haven't had to use the VA so I can't speak from experience but are the issues strictly a matter of money? And do democratic budgets cut VA money compared to Republican?

Because if the VA has had problems for decades that would entail both political parties being in charge and not bettering it

No, the issue isn't money. The issue is that there is no incentive to provide decent care and no punishment for failure to do so.

and then we return to GBA'a post....

No matter, Trump will unjustly get the blame....

What can the gov't do to fix the VA?

As much as I dislike lefty McCain, I like what he ran on back in the day with the idea of having vets get treated in regular hospitals. If I remember right, he was proposing medical insurance cards that would work in regular hospitals.

Thanks to Trump, veterans can now get care outside VA facilities.

Don't tell the OP, though. He claims to care so much about "veterns" (sic) that it upsets him when I mention Trump.
