I don't get it. There's nothing in the anthem about American slaves fighting for their freedom. When you read the entire song as a 4-stanza poem, the line with the words "hireling and slave" is clearly referring to the British (history shows the British owned slaves and brought them with them). The entire poem in context is all about defeating the British while our banner stands. The author is stating in that 3rd stanza that there was no refuge for the "(British)hireling and slave"..."Their blood has wash’d out their foul footstep’s pollution." Who had foul footsteps? The British, not the freedom fighters. It was a victory song, we were beating the British and creating a new country and our banner was waving.

So, what happened here anyway? Somebody get triggered the very word "slave" while ignorantly not understanding the full entire context of the poem?
