GOP Congressman Met in Moscow With Kremlin-Linked Lawyer at Center of Russia Investig

Dana Rohrabacher met with the Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya during a 2016 trip to Moscow, a previously undisclosed tête-à-tête that sheds additional light on the extent to which Moscow-based political operatives sought to influence American officials in the run-up to last year’s presidential election.

In an interview with a pro-Russian Crimean news service, Veselnitskaya said she met with Rohrabacher — a California Republican and arguably the most prominent advocate in Congress for closer relations between Washington and Moscow — in April 2016 to discuss issues surrounding the Magnitsky Act, the punitive American sanctions measure responding to Russian human rights abuses that she has lobbied against.

In her meeting with Rohrabacher, Veselnitskaya said she provided the California Republican with a copy of a documentary produced by Andrei Nekrasov, which questions the credibility of Sergei Magnitsky and Browder, the American financier. Grubbs said Rohrabacher had no recollection of Veselnitskaya handing over the film.

Rohrabacher has pushed for removing Magnitsky’s name from the law and last year attempted to screen the Nekrasov documentary before the House Foreign Affairs Committee, of which he is a senior member. Rep. Ed Royce, a California Republican and the committee’s chairman, scotched the plan to show the film during a June 14, 2016, committee hearing.

While in Moscow, Rohrabacher and his staff met with a variety of Russian officials and received a collection of documents stamped “confidential” alleging that Browder had duped American lawmakers into passing the sanctions bill, according to the Daily Beast. The document was supplied by officials in the Russian prosecutor-general’s office and raised the possibility that repealing the sanctions law could lead to improved relations between Moscow and Washington.

Paul Behrends, a top Rohrabacher aide, was removed from his job as staff director of the foreign affairs subcommittee chaired by the California Republican after news of his involvement in the meeting was made public.

A vocal advocate of warmer relations between Russia and the United States, Rohrabacher has repeatedly gained the attention of Kremlin officials, who view him as one of their few reliable allies in Congress. In 2012, the FBI even warned Rohrabacher that Russian spies were attempting to recruit him, according to the New York

The biggest Russia story is the one the media is going out of its way to ignore.

There's an excellent chance the Fake News Piss Dossier was based on Russian disinformation *paid for* by the FBI. And it was then used as a justification to unmask/wiretap Trump and his associates and to bolster the whole Russian madness, more generally.

But the only way to find out is if the FBI releases documents related to the Dossier. Which they so far have refused to do.

And for good reason, if they have a political interest in the outcome of Mueller's investigation.

ya. I used the Rohrabacher Congressional race to show how Russia-phopbia is practiced by a smear campaign.
His real crime of course is trying to combat Russiaphobia, and get US/Russian back to a semblance of normalcy.

This whole Russian collusion thing and it's offshoots was always built on a house of cards-as was the Clapper assessment itself.
So who knows how tenuous, yet invasive the Mueller investigation is?

The fact the Senate can't confirm anything re: PissGate doesn't stop Mueller.
$$ to donuts he'll come back with some indictments on peeps with absolutely nothing to do with collusion.

The fact the Deep State chose to take this seriously enough to even investigate what is pablum shows their colors too.

sided with Russia in the Russia–Georgia war, gave a qualified defense of the annexation of Crimea in 2014[9][10][11] and supports cooperating with Russia in Syria and in other areas.[12][13][14] There have been questions about his relation with Putin and the Russian government.

Russia[edit]
On September 8, 2008, at a House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee meeting, Rohrabacher argued that the Georgians had initiated the recent military confrontation in the ongoing Russia–Georgia war.[116][117][118]
In April 2014, he supported the idea of Alaskans rejoining Russia if a majority voters in Alaska wanted to.[119]
According to a 2015 article by Politico reporter Luke O'Brien, Rohrabacher is known for his long-time friendship with Russia's Vladimir Putin and his defense of "the Russian point of view."[120][121] On June 15, 2016, Kevin McCarthy told a group of Republicans, "There's two people I think Putin pays: Rohrabacher and Trump. Swear to God." Paul Ryan ended the conversation, saying "No leaks. This is how we know we're a real family here."[13]
It was not reported for another year that around that time, Rohrabacher had planned, in his capacity as chair of the Europe subcommittee, to hold a hearing on the Magnitsky Act, which bars certain Russian officials from entering the United States or holding any financial assets in American banks. At the hearing Bill Browder, the American-born investor who had lobbied for the act's passage after what he claims was the illegal appropriation of his hedge fund's assets and the subsequent murder of his Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky after he discovered this, was to testify. Rohrabacher planned to subject him to what was described as a "show trial", where in addition to questioning Browder closely and skeptically about his claims, a feature-length documentary film critical of the Magnitsky claims directed by Andrei Nekrasov was to be shown in its entirety. Among the other witnesses scheduled to testify were Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya, a longtime lobbyist against the Magnitsky Act who had around the same time attended a meeting with Donald Trump Jr, Jared Kushner and Trump's then-campaign manager Paul Manafort at which the Russians purportedly offered to share negative information about Hillary Clinton, Trump's opponent in that year's election.[122]
When Foreign Affairs Committee chairman Ed Royce learned of the plans, he canceled the hearing and forbade Rohrabacher from showing the film. In its stead, he held a full committee hearing on U.S.-Russia relations at which Rohrabacher was allowed to submit some of the pro-Russian claims into evidence. The film was ultimately shown at the Newseum, and an intern in Rohrabacher's office who later worked for the Trump transition team sent emails promoting the film from the subcommittee offices.[122]
After Donald Trump won the 2016 presidential election, Rohrabacher defends his approach to improve the U.S.-Russia relations. He had previously met at least twice to discuss Russian sanctions with Rinat Akhmetshin, a former Soviet spy, who was later revealed to be present at the June 2016 meeting.[123]
In a May 2017 interview with CNN, Rohrabacher said, "We have a huge double standard with Russia when it comes to prisoners and other things," and further stated that interference by the Russian intelligence services' in the 2016 U.S. election was the same as the NSA bugging German Chancellor Angela Merkel's phone.[

questions about what?
any attempts to talk to Putin to problem solve or advance relations is now considered to be "unAmerican" ( whatever)

Crimea was Putin's hand being forced by US meddling in the Euromaiden and NATO expansion
but don't let facts stop you! More Cold War 2 spending!!

US Congressman talks Russian money laundering with alleged ex-spy in Berlin
By Michael Weiss, CNN Investigates

Updated 10:47 AM ET, Thu May 4, 2017

(CNN)These days, most American officials would be reluctant to disclose any connection to Russia, much less a meeting with an alleged former Soviet spy whose alleged role in lobbying on behalf of Kremlin interests was recently called out by the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
But Dana Rohrabacher, a Republican representative from California, openly acknowledges such a meeting with Rinat Akhmetshin.
It lasted between 15 and 20 minutes and took place the night of April 11 in Berlin, at the lobby bar of the Westin Grand Hotel, according to two eyewitnesses and Rohrabacher.
The topic of discussion: A high-profile Russian money laundering case and related sanctions on Russia.

"We were on our way in and [Akhmetshin] was there," Rohrabacher told CNN.
Just one week before the meeting, Senator Charles Grassley had written a letter to John Kelly, the Secretary of Homeland Security, describing Akhmetshin as "a Russian immigrant to the United States who has been accused of acting as an unregistered agent for Russian interests and apparently has ties to Russian intelligence." Grassley was requesting "all information" on Akhmetshin's immigration history.
Rohrabacher himself described Akhmetshin to CNN as someone with "an ulterior motive" who is "involved with people who've got an agenda" and has "international connections to different groups in Russia." When asked if he thought Akhmetshin was still connected to the Russian security services, Rohrabacher said: "I would certainly not rule that out."

you are too dumb to go there and debate this. your sentences are usaully lacking a clear subject/predicate/object.
you throw out random WIKI without an explanation why.
I am not wasting my time with someone who is either uniformed or so hopelessly partisan it's a worthless activity

How is it "the Dems" when, I believe, it was Russian media who reported this?
as far as I know, and I'm just getting into this - the Crimean news agency that reported on the Veselnitskaya meeting did just that. That looks to be completely normative to me -concerns about the Maginsky(sp) act

expound/give a timeline of your concerns.I am working but will try to answer later

As far as this particular story goes, I don't have any concerns.

There simply is not enough meat on this story to jump to any conclusions. I don't think meeting with Russian, in and of itself, is a problem.
Doing it surreptitiously and then denying you remember it ever happening is kinda weird.

I am generally not prone to jumping to conclusions. The collective weight of evidence needs to be brought to bear, which is why investigations like Muellers presumably are done methodically, slowly, and deliberatively.

Rohrabacher is not supposed to be directing foreign affairs.

he is dirty as hell

this is not his only Russian contact
