Students and other University of Virginia community members shrouded a statue of Thomas Jefferson in black Tuesday night during a rally criticizing the university’s response to recent white nationalist demonstrations that unfolded on and near the campus.

About 100 people gathered for the protest Tuesday night, according to the Daily Progress. They covered the statue of the university’s founder, and signs reading “racist” and “rapist” were placed on it.

Speakers at the rally pressed the university to comply with demands made by the Black Student Alliance last month that included removing Confederate plaques from the university’s rotunda and banning white supremacist groups from campus, the Daily Progress reported.

The Black Student Alliance said in an email that it did not coordinate Tuesday night’s protest and that it was carried out by “unaffiliated student activists.”

The protest occurred weeks after the Charlottesville City Council voted to cover the statues of Confederate generals Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson in black. That decision followed a violent weekend of demonstrations in the city that left one woman dead and many hurt.

we knew historical revisionism wouldn't stop with Confederate statues. Now Thomas Jefferson is to be reviled..
Columbus is of course a "racist"..Welcome to America's version of the Maoist Cultural Revolution

It isn't revisionism when it is true. A genius and great human with human flaws all too common in his age. You can lionize Jefferson and his achievements without the truth that he owned slaves and begot children from slave women and while married if you wish. That does not make the truth revisionism. Go back to the 1950s. That's your warm cozy.

the revisionism is when Jefferson is solely reviled as a slave holder.
I agree with your assessment of Jefferson the man - "genius with human flaws" as you put it.

The revisionists would paint Jefferson solely as a slave holder, ignoring his many other roles in the age of enlightenment

liberals must feel like the most toddler like adults on the planet.

When you fight so hard to have something removed today that didn't bother you yesterday it simply means something pissed you off so much you had to lurch out at something to vent.
And you chose American History. Sad sad group you are, and no wonder you lose all the time.

Lack of consistent moral compass is a sign that your inner world has no grounding in dignity, or meaning.
Life is too short to act like that, but I guess when you just can't help it, own it.

We shouldn't mythologize people. I grew up w/ Columbus being this do-no-wrong, intrepid icon - do you think that was "real" history, or revisionist?

The truth can be a bummer, sometimes. No one is going to forget Jefferson's role in establishing America, but there also isn't any reason to gloss over his flaws.

moral compass kid, don't embarrass yourself

Told ya. There is never an "end" to marxists/leftists. Today it was Lee and Jackson, tommorrow its Washington and Jefferson.

They are trying to get rid of history.

Apparently, Libtards are shocked to learn that Jefferson and Columbus had "flaws" :palm: That is common knowledge to us adults. :palm:

What a croc, I only wish for the full story to be told and for history not to idolize this man because he was indeed flawed and he knew it, he struggled with it.

The Socialist Democrats have mythologized the world history of slavery.

Despite his flaws, if we didn't have Jefferson/Washington and the other founders, we wouldn't have a nation. We wouldn't have the great republic experience. The revision is only telling half truths, and lies.

As always the liberals are correct. If anything, it is a Chairman Mao type sanitized vision of history that got anatta and his ilk to deify Jefferson and the other founding fathers. It appears most people here are mature enough to handle some ugly truth.

The list and breadth of Jefferson's accomplishments and talents is EXTREMELY long, however, probably only exceeded by T A Edison.

They are shocked America had slaves, when every civilization in the world previously and up to that point also had slaves. They act as if we were the only ones EVER to have slaves.

BTW Africa is still rich with modern day slavery. Where is the protests and outrage?

Has anyone suggested striking what they did for America from the historical record?

Where exactly do you see "shock"?

Kind of a warped take. But anything that works for ya.

It would be interesting to see Dog's reaction if the whites of appalachia were enslaved for a few hundred years by blacks and after having gained rights, a small vigil was held simply covering a notable black master in effigy.
