ACLU fires back at Gov. McAuliffe, claims police stood by waiting for violence

They should not have been permitted.

History shows the hate and violence these groups cause.

Why would non racist whites want these types of groups parading around in the streets knowing what they are capable of?

Hate speech has no right.

Texas A&M did the right thing, canceled rally scheduled for 9/11.

I think there will be more of this to come.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (WWBT) -

The ACLU is firing back at Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe after they say he blamed them for the violence that took place on Saturday in Charlottesville.

The allegations came when McAuliffe was speaking on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition on Monday.

"The City of Charlottesville asked for that to be moved out of downtown Charlottesville to a park about a mile and a half away to a park with a lot of open fields. That was the place where it should have been," McAuliffe said. "We were unfortunately sued by the ACLU. The judge ruled against us. That rally should not have been in the middle of downtown."

The ACLU responded that they "are horrified by the violence that took place in Charlottesville...
But let’s be clear: our lawsuit challenging the city to act constitutionally did not cause violence nor did it in any way address the question whether demonstrators could carry sticks or other weapons at the events."

The ACLU says they are willing to work with McAuliffe and Attorney General Mark Herring "to ensure that public officials understand their rights and obligations under the law."

"We asked the city to adhere to the U.S. Constitution and ensure people’s safety at the protest. It failed to do so. In our system, the city makes the rules and the courts enforce them. Our role is to ensure that the system works the same for everyone," said ACLU of Virginia’s Executive Director Claire G. Gastanaga. "It is the responsibility of law enforcement to ensure safety of both protesters and counter-protesters. The policing on Saturday was not effective in preventing violence."

Gastanaga claims law enforcement "was standing passively by, seeming to be waiting for violence to take place, so that they would have grounds to declare an emergency, declare an ‘unlawful assembly’ and clear the area."

Here you go, blaming everyone but the racist white men who caused this entire fiasco.

should sessions send more kops to white neighborhoods?

I hope so.

These people are allowed to flourish because other americans falsely believe they have the right to free speech.

This is not free speech and should not be allowed.

I agree, they would not allow ISIS to hold a rally. The FBI is concerned about this movement.

Isn't this what the ACLU is all about? First amendment rights and protections for even the worst of society?
Yes. It seems the local chapter sued to keep Charlottesville from moving the Nazis to a larger place to avoid issues like the ones we saw on Sat.. There was no attempt to limit free speech.

They should stand up and take credit for the murder, instead of blaming it on the cops.

McAuliffe is pretty clueless. The request to move was to protect property. The conflict still would have happened regardless of where it was held. It would be much easier to separate the marchers and the protestors in a city... and they could have done that, but they didn't.

EXACTLY!

The FBI warned that these groups were on the rise.

Racism, bigotry and ignorance thrive on silence.

Can you imagine BLM protesting with guns?

Probably a liability thing. I'll bet their insurer told them that they aren't covered

when is there never not a liability issue when large number of people march in the streets? Hell, look at Oakland where I live. Businesses get vandalized every single time there is a march but they're still allowed to have them.

McAuliffe was looking to spotlight himself as a 2020 force but getting buggered by the ACLU will have quite the opposite effect thank God.
