Homeschooling

My buddy's a professional athlete and they home school their kid because of their crazy travelling schedule. They turn in all their work as required etc. is there a problem with that?

I think they kid shuld have to go do testing at a local school.

Not just mailed in

a parent could fake it

I don't know about other states, but when we homeschooled my son one year, they required a completed test be sent in and graded for completion. In any case, why is it the governments concern?

Because you can't trust everyone to follow the rules and do what's best not only for the child but for society as well.

Keep in mind that society has to deal with the products of all schooling. Public, private, religious, charter and home.

Home schoolers have the least oversight so there is very little way to tell what these kids are being taught or the quality of how they are being taught.

Kids who receive a substandard education tend to place a burden on society as they get older.

Is there any research to show home schooled perform worse than their peers?

there is crime everywhwere asshole

does that mean all schools are evil

Under your thoughts everyone should give up on everything.

we have schools

fund them and make sure they are doing a good job.

You want to kill them all

One of the smartest women I know was homeschooled till college. Nice try you ignorant ass.

...she's probably an idiot to everyone else.

My niece homeschools her five children. Interesting bunch, they live on a farm in Nebraska, highly intelligent children, but very free spirits. My mother was against home schooling, I, myself did not wish to school my own children, I think they need the social structure. I think like teachers in the public system, some do it well, others miss their mark. I feel it gives children a social disadvantage, just my opinion, I just remember how hard it was for me to transition from parochial school to public school.

independent testing of the students

I think you can cram to defeat a test. As a student of human nature, I don't think occasional independent tests are going to ensure that the children are getting
6 or 7 hours of enriched scholastic activity each day, and they damn sure won't be enlarging their skills for acquisition of social capital.

is there any data involved here or just personal preference of not liking how certain people raise their kids?

Not if the child is already being recruited by professional scouts. It's the same problem no matter what. Our inability to control and therefore monitor the product, i.e a quality edumacation. It's just different. Familiarity breeds contempt. Kids can manipulate their parental units. There is no normal peer pressure to conform. Your friend could have set the boy or girl up with the best ed ever, but who the hell knows? Sure, their child's ed is their personal business, but an educated society is everyone's business. Therein lies the rub.

Plus, no pep rallies in the gym before Friday night football games, or dating cheerleaders, or playing in the marching band, or being in the drama club, or on the track team or having a favorite teacher or skipping class etc, etc, etc.

School is an entire realm of experiences that help prepare kids for adult life.

Keeping them locked in the house with mom everyday is just likely to produce emotional cripples.

Not sure, I bet it's dicey to find data we all can agree upon. Im sure homeschool organizations will tout outrageous claims while nanny gubmint will say otherwise.
How do we know until we see the college admissions? Hey, Harvard, I homeschooled my kid and he got straight A plusses. I have no idea how he got 1100 of his Sat.
Except that I was too stupid to perform the linear algebra AP class I gave to him, so he got an A minus from me.
