Yes. 'At some point'. Right now, they have the luxury of waiting this out, hoping that they can achieve SOMETHING to point to in the mid terms. Granted....Georgia is going to be a canary in the coal mine in June.

BAC, to answer your question from earlier in the thread about compassion and cutting spending for the poor. From a 30K foot level no I don't want to see spending cut for the poor. But all spending isn't good spending and I think we should review the spending programs we have and their effectiveness. And if certain programs for the poor aren't efficient I have no problem cutting or changing them. I don't see that in any way as being non compassionate.

This goes back to the argument that liberals can't be racist. Do you agree with TTQ64 that all the Presidents before Obama were racist (as an example)? Because a number of them were Democrats unless the argument is they were conservative Democrats.

I disagree.

Republicans can't wait until the midterms are near to try and distance themselves from Trump. Many never liked Trump in the first place.

Everybody CAN be racist, but that's not nearly as evident among the Left than it is among the Right.

I believe that many presidents in the past have been racist, including some democrats. The Democratic Party was once the home for racists. But in modern times, there is absolutely no doubt whatsoever where racists call home today.

I don't disagree with that .. but the republican budget makes no such effort. It's a tax cut for the rich at the expense of the American people.

I don't see it as non compassionate to say we have to take a look at programs with unsustainable spending. It's being responsible and 'caring for the next generation'.

New data provide a compelling answer to this vexing question.

Was Donald Trump elected because of racism or economic anxiety? Few questions about the 2016 election have generated more analysis. As we’ve previously written, it is clear racism propelled Trump to the Republican nomination. But how did the racial resentment that powered Trump’s ascent differ from the support for Republican candidates in prior elections? And what was the relative importance of economic peril to voting in 2016 compared to several different types of racism and racial animus exhibited by voters?

The answers can be found in the comprehensive American National Election Studies pre- and post-election survey of over 4,000 respondents, which we analyzed to explore the impact of racism and economic peril on 2016 voting behavior. The results are clear, and move a long way towards settling this debate.

Our analysis shows Trump accelerated a realignment in the electorate around racism, across several different measures of racial animus—and that it helped him win. By contrast, we found little evidence to suggest individual economic distress benefited Trump.

The American political system is sorting so that racial progressivism and economic progressivism are aligned in the Democratic Party and racial conservatism and economic conservatism are aligned in the Republican Party.
