Trump's lie du jour - murder rate "highest it's been in 47 years"

I'm still not sure that it would be accurate even if you said "within our cities" as part of the statistic. I also want to see the 2016 numbers... The FBI usually puts out the report for the preceding year in September. I just wish he wouldn't draw attention to the argument negatively like this. The murder rates in cities like Chicago are horrific enough without giving others a statistical accuracy argument that can be twisted.

Trump is doing a bad job getting the message out, because he isn't careful to avoid obvious arguments the other side may bring. If you can get people talking about statistics it takes the humanity from the discussion and leaves you arguing "but he meant cities"... rather than talking about 100s of murders every month of actual people in those cities.

Even though the debate might play well in the media bubble, I figure a lot of people tune that out as noise. I'm sure Trump supporters do.

It's it quite possible Trump is aware of it. It would explain his carelessness.

Hey, you like to use the ol' 57 states thing w/ Obama all the time. Why can't that be a gaffe? Why can't we assume he was also talking about the states plus territories like Guam, DC, Virgin Islands, etc.?

Oh, that's right - he's a Democrat.

Well he was anyway. I am sure now that he is out of Washington, he will vote Republican.......

You're not very good at math. The peak rates were in the '90's. But even if the rates were higher in the '90's (which they were - and it's even on that Politifact page you went to), that's all we need to know. We don't need to go back 47 years. Trump said that the rates are higher now than in the past 47 years, so they just have to be lower than they were at any point during that time. And they were almost twice as high in the '90's.

The data I saw only goes up to the end of 2016. I think it's safe to say there wasn't a 3% jump after the rates have hovered around 5/5.5% for the past decade. If they did have that kind of unreal increase, since you want to credit Trump with everything that has happened this year, it's on him...right?

But they haven't, I'm quite sure.

Damned if I can find anything later than 2015...up 11.8 % from 2014.......got a link ?

"OOPS
Chicago's murder rate soars 72% in 2016; shootings up more than 88%" Tc #39

Excellent.
Now please post the comment President Trump made about the NATIONAL murder rate.

Thanks.

that is where all this started, only a dumbass would dismiss Chicago's murder rates

Have you been in a coma? Trump has mentioned the Chicago issue numerous times, LOL, you guys really do live in a bubble don't you?

He has talked about Chicago separately. Not in the context of the remarks of this OP. It's the most desperate spin possible to say he was talking about only Chicago when he said that.

He'd still be wrong. The murder rate has seen a significant rise in some cities but that increase is from a historically low rate and remains historically low.

Trump is just looking for excuses to create a police state.

It's the most desperate spin to claim you know what he was talking about.

Your bitch still lost no matter how hard you cry.

Bullshit, if Chicago and other large cities allowed law abiding citizens to protect themselves this would be a non issue

Those large cities restrict gun ownership by law then wonder why those that could care less about following the law do the things they do.

I was in Chicago a few weeks ago, amazing how the gold wearing thugs want to leave people alone when they figure out they might be shot for fucking with them.

Maybe that's why these left wing rioters do what they do in their own little enclaves. They protest and riot in their own little hoods but you don't see them venturing out from them.

Same in Washington, DC. It's 68.3 square miles of which 61.4 is land. It's made up of two distinctive parts. The government area and the hood. Anyone that's been there can easily see the dividing point between the two. Nowhere near the crime exists in the government area as exists in the hood. There is a reason for that.
