The words "...he's done an amazing job..." imply that he's still doing the job.

The words "...and is getting recognized more and more, I notice" imply that he thinks the guy is receiving accolades for the work he is currently engaged in.

If he was speaking in past tense, he would've said "...he did an amazing job and has been widely recognized for it over the years."

I know it must be tough to accept the fact that your hero is an empty suit, but you're going to have to face the fact the eventually.
