feds denying right to travel without proper ID

http://www.aol.com/article/news/201...ses-as-valid-id-for-domestic-travel/21640627/

If you're like most Americans, you use a driver's license to get through security at the airport. Well, the rules on what makes that license a valid form of federal ID are changing.

It's a process more than a decade in the making. In 2005, Congress passed the Real ID Act. It sets stricter and more secure requirements for state driver's licenses and identification cards.

So what's on a Real ID? Your full legal name, birth date, gender, address, signature, a license or ID number, digital photograph, security features and machine-readable technology, like a barcode.

The problem is some states are issuing IDs that don't comply with the new rules. Those states are Kentucky, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Washington.

Starting Jan. 22, 2018, TSA security won't accept driver's licenses from those states as a valid form of ID.

Seventeen states have filed for an extension to become complaint with the Real ID regulations. That extension allows residents of those states to use their current IDs until October 2020.

The date for everyone to know is Oct. 1, 2020. That's when all licenses used to get on a plane or in a federal building must be Real ID compliant.

but by all means, lets not require a specific ID for voting.......that's just too much infringement.

But not to vote?

I have no problem for requiring ID for voting if:

1) There's no cost associated with it. That's tantamount to a poll tax. And that includes the cost of getting a birth certificate prior to getting the ID.
2) A person doesn't have to travel to obtain it. Many don't have transportation to go to a county courthouse or wherever.
3) College students from outside their state should automatically qualify for one with just their college ID as proof. Many states disallow that.

what about requiring an ID to travel? do those same exceptions/restrictions apply then?

Do you know what the term false equivalency means? If not, look it up.

false equivalency is often used as a means of deflecting away from having a persons argument blasted apart. if a person can obtain a state ID or drivers license, they can obtain a voter ID, especially if the state would use those IDs to vote.

Nothing more typical from a pinhead liberal than that....."I want it free", "Let someone else pay for my Birth Certificate".....free, free, free.....

US has issued BC's since 1902, free, at birth....if you lost it, pay for it yourself.

Here's the false equivalency, dumberthananyone. If a person can afford to travel by air these days, they most certainly have the means to acquire everything from driver's licenses to passports. That's not the demographic that is being disenfranchised by the voter ID issue. There is an entire segment of the population who don't have birth certificates available to obtain the ID in the first place. Obtaining those is a cost and a burden in itself. That which many can't afford. There is an entire segment of the population who have no to limited means of transportation to 1) obtain that birth certificate and 2) use that to obtain a voter ID.

Make the birth certificate free and easily available to those people and automatically include a free ID and I'm fine. Until then, it's nothing more than the continuing RW attempt to disenfranchise voters who would normally vote Dem. Don't be ashamed to admit that. It's not a well-kept secret.

What segment of the population are you talking about? You neglected to mention that.

I also would be interested in who is in this "...entire segment of the population..." are, also. :dunno:

Plus; where would they be flying too, if they don't have the finances to obtain an ID?? :palm:

Pretty commonly known. The elderly, especially the minority elderly, low-income, the disabled, to some degree college students. But, in the decision that struck down voter ID in North Carolina, the court noted that it was blacks that were targeted with "surgical precision".

Yeah, I figured you were going to eventually end up at the blacks.

Blacks don't know how to get to the DMV? They don't have enough money to obtain ID?

Do you have any idea how fucking racist you sound?

If there's a cost associated with the right to vote, it's tantamount to a poll tax, dumbfuck. Those have been illegal for years. That's not difficult to understand except for morons like you.

Do you have any idea how fucking stupid you are? Many have little to no means to get to the DMV. They have little or no
Means to obtain birth certificates, too.

Here, shit for brains. Try some different for once. Educate yourself before you shoot off your fucking pie hole and continue to pride what an idiot you are.

Thanks for the topic StU.

Perhaps worth noting:

New York State offers an enhanced driver's license. With it, limited international travel is also permitted;
we (civilians) can travel into Canada, and limited parts of the Caribbean, but only with that enhanced license, or a passport.

I agree with the OP sentiment. ID for voting and flying. We can't be letting terrorists get phony state ID's and get into the air. The Real ID act has a solid basis.
