Where's the money, Teflon Don?

Teflon Don Trump said he raised $6 million for veterans groups at a January fundraiser.

The Washington Post's accounting, based on interviews with charities, only found $3.1 million in donations to veterans groups.

In addition, almost four months after promising $1 million of his own money to veterans' causes, Trump FINALLY moved to fulfill that pledge.

Trump organized a nationally televised fundraiser for veterans’ causes in Des Moines on Jan. 28.

That night, Trump said he had raised $6 million, including the gift from his own pocket.

“Donald Trump gave $1 million,” he said then.

As recently as last week, Trump’s campaign manager had insisted that the mogul had already given that money away.

But that was false: Trump had not.

The Washington Post and other media outlets pressed Trump and his campaign for details about how much the fundraiser had actually raised and whether Trump had given his portion.

The candidate refused to provide details. On Monday, a Post reporter used Twitter — Trump’s preferred social-media platform — to search publicly for any veterans groups that had received Trump’s money.

By Monday afternoon, The Post had found none. But it seems to have caught the candidate’s attention.

Later Monday evening, Trump called the home of James K. Kallstrom, a former FBI official who is chairman of the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation. The charity aids families of fallen Marines and federal law enforcement officers.

Trump told Kallstrom that he would give the entire $1 million to the group, according to Kallstrom’s wife. Sue Kallstrom said she was not sure whether the money had been transferred yet.

Other big donors to Trump’s fundraiser had already made their gifts weeks before. Why had Trump waited so long?

“You have a lot of vetting to do,” Trump said Tuesday in a telephone interview conducted while he was flying to a campaign rally in Albuquerque.

For this particular donation, it would seem that little new vetting was required because Trump already knew the recipient well.

The Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation had already received more than $230,000 in donations from the Donald J. Trump Foundation — a charity controlled by Trump but largely funded by others.

Last year, the group gave Trump its “Commandant’s Leadership Award” at a gala in New York.

When asked Tuesday whether he had given the money this week only because reporters had been asking about it, Trump responded: “You know, you’re a nasty guy. You’re really a nasty guy. I gave out millions of dollars that I had no obligation to do.”

Trump’s call on Monday night stood in contradiction to an account given Friday by campaign manager Corey Lewandowski. “The money is fully spent,” Lewandowski said then. “Mr. Trump’s money is fully spent.”

The obvious thing to me about Trump, there will be no transparency in his organization. I wonder if they will accept this fact after having criticized previous administration for lack of transparency.

They can't even agree on their own lies.

On Tuesday, Trump said Lewandowski would not have been in a position to know that. “I don’t know that Corey would even know when I gave it out,” he said.

In the same interview, Trump said the fundraiser had raised about $5.5 million for veterans overall. He said he was not sure how much of it remained to be given away.

That also contrasted with the account last week from Lewandowski, who said that about $4.5 million had been raised and that Trump’s effort had fallen short of the promised $6 million because some unnamed big donors had backed out.

On Tuesday, Trump said no major contributors had reneged. “For the most part, I think they all came through,” he said. “Some of them came through very late.”

Trump also said he had never actually promised that the fundraiser had raised $6 million. “I didn’t say six,” he said.

But, in video of the event, Trump tells the crowd, “We just cracked $6 million! Right? $6 million.”

Trump was told that he did, indeed, say “$6 million.”

“Well, I don’t, I don’t have the notes. I don’t have the tape of it,” he said. “Play [the tape] for me. Because I’d like to hear it.” Before the video could be cued up, Trump had moved on.

The bolded is, of course, facetious.

There are very few things that he has criticized others for, that he hasn't either done himself, or supported in the past.

As to the OP, this is what Trump does, and I understand that he has written about it in one of his books. Exaggeration is a strategy for him, and it's something that he doesn't seem to be able to turn off. If we really wanted to do an historical analysis, we could probably come up with some sort of mathematical formula that would allow us to arrive at the actual #'s or statistics when he's making a claim.

Though, some are just fabrications - like thousands celebrating on 9/11 - so maybe that wouldn't work.

The story of his nighttime gift seemed to highlight a unique quality of Trump: his acute sensitivity to losing face on social media. He had routinely rejected questions about the fundraiser for veterans if they were posed in person.

“Why should I give you records?” Trump said in an interview with The Post earlier this month, when he was asked about the money. “I don’t have to give you records.”

Then, on Monday, a Post reporter publicly queried multiple veterans groups on Twitter, asking whether they had received personal donations from Trump. None had.

Hours later, after 10:38 p.m. Eastern time, Trump responded on Twitter: “While under no obligation to do so, I have raised between 5 & 6 million dollars, including 1million dollars from me, for our VETERANS. Nice!”

And sometime that same evening, Trump called to make the donation to James Kallstrom’s group. Sue Kallstrom wasn’t sure what time the call was, only that it happened after she went to bed.

But but but...it's okay with partisan Righties when Trump lies, don't ya know.

It's only when they think Hillary has lied that they get up on their high horses.

But it did appear that Trump’s staff was preparing to disburse more gifts.

In recent weeks, other veterans groups had been struggling to figure out how to ask for some of Trump’s remaining money. Trump provided no formal way to apply.

IT sure sounded good when Dangerous Don said he would donate 1,000,000 and that he had raised 6,000,000. It helped with the dumber voters.

Better late than never.

Months after Donald Trump claimed he'd raised $6 million for veterans charities, including $1 million of his own money, he finally accounted for some of that cash on Tuesday during a Trump Tower press conference.

"I have raised a tremendous amount of money for the vets, almost $6 million, and more money's going to come in... almost all of the money has been paid out," he claimed during the press conference, saying he'd reached $5.6 million overall and arguing the process had been so slow because he had to "vet" the individual organizations.

Trump skipped a late January Republican presidential debate to hold a fundraiser for veterans - and spent the last few months bragging about how much he'd raised and donated.

But some of that money hasn't actually come through, despite Trump's claim that he'd donated $1 million.

After being called out for lying about the donation, Trump made good on the promise by pledging that amount to the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation.

Trump's own campaign said recently that the event had actually raised $4.5 million, rather than the full $6 million he'd claimed, because some promised donations hadn't come in.

He contradicted that, saying with his own $1 million donation the total was actually $5.5 million.

Trump will surely brag, as he always does, about his supposed generosity and appreciation for our veterans, but nobody should be fooled by this stunt, only completed under immense pressure.

The truth is, throughout this campaign and his entire career, he's shown veterans an incredible amount of disrespect.

Trump announced he'd given away the last $1.5 million that other donors had entrusted to him four months earlier, when Trump held a televised benefit for veterans' charities.

But, at the same time, Trump blasted the news media — in terms that were bitter, even for him — for asking about how, and when, he was going to give this money away.

Trump called the media in general "dishonest" and "unfair," and referred to a particular TV reporter as a "sleaze."

His complaints dominated an event that was supposed to be about Trump's own charity.

“I wasn’t looking for the credit, but I had no choice but to do this because the press was saying I didn’t raise any money for them,” Trump said.

The donations Trump announced Tuesday were related to a Jan. 28 fundraiser for veterans that he held in Des Moines, on a night when Trump skipped a GOP debate due to a feud with its host, Fox News.

That night, Trump said he'd raised $6 million. Most of it came from other donors, but Trump said he would give $1 million of his own.

After that, however, Trump became reluctant to release details about what had become of the money.

At times, too, his staff gave out false information: More than a week ago, Trump's campaign manager said that Trump had already given out his $1 million in personal gifts.

Trump is a sleazebag.

Trump made his $1 million donation the evening of May 23, after a day of inquiries on Twitter — Trump's preferred social-media platform — by The Washington Post.

On Tuesday, Trump was giving away donations that had originally come in from other people, and were routed through his Donald J. Trump Foundation. He said that, in all, the fundraiser had brought in $5.6 million — but that more money would come in.

Trump detailed new gifts to more than a dozen veterans groups, most of them $75,000 each. By Tuesday afternoon, several of them had confirmed to The Post that they had indeed received the checks. Trump said that all of the money had been paid out, except for a single check to one group waiting for IRS authorization.

But, even as Trump described these gifts, he would interrupt to blast the press again.

"The press should be ashamed of themselves. And on behalf of the vets, the press should be ashamed of themselves," Trump said at one point. "Instead of being, like, 'Thank you very much, Mr. Trump,' or 'Trump did a good job,' You say, 'Well who got it? Who got it?' And it makes me look very bad."

By law, nonprofit charities like Trump's foundation are not supposed to participate in political campaigns. At this event, however, Trump described the nonprofit's gifts at what was clearly a campaign event — at which he bashed his rivals, and talked up his poll numbers. He spoke from a podium that said "Make America Great Again," the slogan of his campaign.
