Donald Trump: ‘Trained teachers should be able to have guns in classrooms’?!!

It's a reasonable proposition. Many school-shootings might have been prevented if those trapped inside were not so helpless. Mass shooters tend to target areas where they know there will be no guns and plenty of defenseless victims.

That being said - I do disagree with Mr. Trump here. I think guns in our classrooms is probably a mistake. I would prefer that we tighten up security and make it to where it's impossible to bring guns inside a school.

The only protection from bad children with a gun is a good hall monitor with a gun. And crossing guards. And janitors. And school bus drivers. And counselors. And lunch room ladies. And principals. And vice-principals. And secretaries. And prom queens. And prom kings. And coaches. And assistant coaches. And cheerleaders. And librarians. And teachers. And maintenance workers. And sports teams. And the chess club. And 4H members. And... well do I have to go on?

But just in case an outside crazy wanders into this sea of guns, the children should also be required to pack heat. There, NOW they are safe. No longer in danger.

Yes, everyone should pack automatic rifles, just in case.

Look, I have two kids, and they are too young to shoot. When they get older, sure, I'll teach them, but I most certainly will not force them to fire a gun or even like guns.

My granddad let me try his 10 gauge shotgun when I was nine. I was instantly on my back, flat as a pancake. Don't know how that relates to this thread, but it certainly was one of my most vivid memories. Glad they stopped making 10 gauges, except that I probably would have killed a few more ducks.

which is why guns don't belong in the classroom. In the vast overwhelming majority of schools the simply aren't needed for security and it undermines the uncomfortable truth that he who lives by the gun dies by the gun. I see little pedagogical value of introducing gun fetish into schools. In fact the opposite. I see the potential for the great harm they can do towards the education experience by the chill dampening affect they can have on free inquiry and a symbol of authoritarianism.

That's not to say they should be banished completely from school but we certainly don't need the NRAs fetishization of guns in schools.
