I can assure you this is not an Obama partisan point. This is standing US policy he was discussing and, as I said, another US President, regardless of party, would have said much the same. We, the US, believe that the UK has a strong leadership role in the EU succeeding and the US has strong interest in the EU succeeding.

The U.K. Founded NATO, not the US. Point being NATO cannot exist without the UK.

I don't think so. western Europe came up with the idea of cooperative defense,
but as far as I know the US has always been part of NATO from the founding of the alliance..

I don't dispute NATO would be a shell without the UK - but the UK leaving the EU wouldn't necessarily effect NATO.
At one time the U.K wasn't part of the EU -but was still part of NATO.
 
Militarily, what value would the weak UK even have?

I'm sick of paying to defend prats like Tom while they bash America.

Germany is part of NATO...the alliance is greater then the sum of it's parts. Why would the UK be 'weak' if it left the EU?

Bullshit, it has a strong interest in imposing TTIP and making it easier for shyster lawyers and heartless healthcare companies to sue and grab. We don't want it, it is the giant corporations that do though. I thought you were against crony capitalism?

NATO was founded by the US, Canada, the UK, France, Holland, Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Portugal, Iceland, Italy, and Luxembourg in 1949 and predates the EU, or more exactly the European Economic Community, by eight years. People seem to think that everything is dependent on the EU which is just rubbish.

I hope Trump will end your alliances with everyone, but meanwhile this sort of talk is extreme-tory bullshit gone mad. There has been no real alliance, obviously, since the UK became a disguised colony after the War. The tories want to turn it into a second Puerto Rico, which is why they are having tantrums when Massuh says otherwise.

It's interesting to me how you 'mercan folks view Obama's speech here in the UK. As a political realist and supporter of the eu - I found it quite welcome and not at all offensive. Brexit - i.e. british exit from the eu, is a bloody awful idea. My hope is that the referendum will settle the question of our relationship to the eu once and for all, and let us get down to business.
