Pope Francis asks forgiveness for priests who sexually abused children

He is taking concrete steps.

"Some things are worth the wait. At least that is the hope when it comes to Pope Francis’s surprisingly well-rounded new commission appointed to deal with the ongoing priest sex abuse problem in the global Catholic Church. The commission, announced Saturday by the Holy See press office, is made up of four women, one of whom is a victim of sex abuse by a priest, and four men – only three of whom are clerics...

...The more surprising members of the group are the female members. Marie Collins is a married Irish woman who was raped at the age of 13 by a priest. She is an activist for child safety within the Catholic Church and has been vocal about how she was snubbed by her local parish and told to “protect the priest’s good name” when she accused him. Francis also appointed noted French psychologist Catherine Bonnet, who has written extensively about child sex abuse, and Baroness Sheila Hollins from the United Kingdom who is an expert in mental health."

Defrock for suspicion, excommunicate for conviction. Blue ribbon commissions are can kickers.

thanks for proving my point rune. MM was "perm" banned for stalking me and posting my personal information on this board, REPEATEDLY. and you think he is a good guy. says everything i need to know about you.

I wasn't here when he was banned, I know nothing about that except what you are announcing. I base my opinion of him on what he does now, and I find myself in agreement with him most of the time.

It is unbelievably narcissistic of you to judge me based on how I judge someone who you deem to have done injustice to you, as if you are all that matters in the world. I am an asshole because I don't condemn your enemy?

Ah the old yurt is back. The snivilling whining, lying little pussy. You quoted directly from a PM I sent to you and Damo ordered you to erase it, which you promptly did. You should have been banned, so STFU.

How is this whiner's employment threatened by posting on a message board? Inquiring minds want to know.

I'm not naturally averse to forgiveness but it's only the first step. As long as these offenders aren't punished for their crimes, the Church is just paying lip service to the problem. It's sad that your priest acquaintance was wrongly accused. Why was he recalled to Rome and retired? It's not like there are too many priests to go around. Way fewer numbers of men are entering and parishes are closing because of the lack.

I understand that in the past these offenses were considered illness, not crime, and that's why priests weren't prosecuted. That line of thinking wasn't particular to the priesthood either but to most professions. Cognitive and/or behavioural therapy was the standard treatment to eliminate pedophilia. We know now they don't work.

The Church needs to find a better way of weeding out potential abusers before they're ordained, to stop covering up for those they know are abusers, and to make sure confirmed abusers are punished to the fullest extent.

To be skeptical, they had already gotten their use out of him. He initially came to the parish to assist a cancer-ridden pastor. They co-ran it for almost two years. There was also a monsignor he took care of. They got 5 solid years out of him and then replaced him with a visiting priest from Germany who put in 5 more. Also, the Seattle Archdiocese hasn't made much sense with some of it's random assignments lately. A major at work actually had his personal info compromised by them as an active volunteer. He and his wife had to spend an off-day attending to it. The guy's callsign is Doctor, so I imagine he's got it covered.

Defrock and excommunicate? That doesn't address or punish the criminality.

Conviction kinda addresses the consequence of punishment but if a priest were true to his vows excommunication wiuld be quite harsh. Defrock, and I apologise for not stating it before, would include making any unknown allegations known to the police for them to investigate. The appearance of improprioity gets you the door. Im good with draconian measures here. This shiuld address punishment but the kicker comes when they face God and Im good letting Him make the final call.

Can't argue with this.

Francis how bout you give up the pagan rituals, allow woman to be priest and male priest allowed to marry!
