Is "Thug" an overused term with racial undertones?

backpeddle much? You ought to answer the question...

If someone is called something like a thug for reasons unknown to him or her, and they feel it carries racist undertones do you dismiss it?

Dearest Sun... perhaps you can explain how I was backpedaling?

I commented on her question. I stated quite clearly that a person can insert any word that has negative meaning and ask the same question. It effectively eliminates the use of any negative word if used in reference to the actions of a minority because cries of racism could follow.

because we aren't going to bow down to your delicate sensibilities. We just aren't going to take 5 lashings every time we say a no-no word on the secret list. Fuck, it would be really nice if everyone knew the no-no words before saying them. Can we please get that list out in the open? Cause it always feels like it's being made up after the fact.

I got punched in the face by a guy running from the cops once, he was white and I always referred to him as a thug. Thug is not a term steeped in racism.

It wouldn't be a secret list if they let us all see it ahead of time.

That's nice. It had nothing to do with what I posted though. I think you should read what DH posted again. Maybe wait till you come down from your rage high first.

Except it had everything to do with his number three. He is saying that people are being racist without knowing they are being racist because there is a secret racist code word book that only a few of you have.

Here you go

No need to think me, educating you always delights me!

No, it can't easily been seen as "thuggish." That's the problem. Labeling him a thug based on that snippet of time is the kind of thing racists do.

i will agree that people calling him a thug based on the clip is a major overreaction.

Russell Wilson is one of the "good ones."

Yeah, because the only Native American tribe that had African descendant members clearly are the racists here and use "good ones" regularly to describe people of minority status. Dung, quit playing "gotcha" and start holding a conversation.

I told you so. Now you are learning

it's in response to your "i dont know why it's so difficult to grasp"... we get what you are saying, we just don't agree.

You keep referring to looks... I haven't seen anyone refer to looks on here.

Take this guy

And this guy

Differences... Of course. Similarities ... Absolutely. Pigmentation, dreads, etc. Why would most prefer the second to be the face of their organization? Because he hasn't gone off on some rant that portrays the attitude that it is all about him or that he thinks less of someone else...in a hateful sounding manner. Looks have nothing to do with the feelings of many. What is said and done by the individual does.

Now, Mr. Sherman might be a really nice guy who just happened to have "gone off" while being caught up in the emotion of the situation, and I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. But at that point, at that time, his choice of words and body language was less than stellar.

He is a public figure who made a public statement and I as a private viewer have formed an opinion. I can tell you that race in no way plays into that opinion, but it doesn't matter. I can tell you that I view Ben Rothlisberger as being worse than a thug because of his treatment of women, but you can believe that or not. I make judgments and develop opinions about people in the public sector all the time and sometimes I even change those opinions. Chris Christie is a bully, Mitch McConnell is a whiny butt, Maxine Waters is a lunatic, etc. It's what I think at the moment.

I will say that I view (MY OPINION and doesn't count for much) this as just another push from some in society to try to make everything acceptable. It seems that so many don't want there to be a standard of behavior where something said or done is deemed as acceptable or unacceptable or right and wrong. Again, this is all just my opinion and it and a quarter will buy you a cup of coffee in my hometown store.

Thank you, leaningright, for that thoughtful post. In my view, the standards applied to athletes are asinine in general. Looking at the people you mentioned, Ben Roethlesberger is a rapist. I mean, yeah, it's OK to shit on him. Chris Christie is the governor of one of the larger states and has been talked about as a potential presidential candidate. Mitch McConnell is the Senate Minority Leader. Maxine Waters was a member of the US House of Representatives. Richard Sherman is 25 and plays football for a living.

Also, too, and just out of curiosity, where does SF's behavior rank with respect to your standards of acceptability?

Maybe the left and their race hustling friends would be kind enough to tell us white privileged crackas what words will not offend the delicate sensibilities of today's colored community.

Hell we have so many supposed "code words" I am finding it near impossible to keep up with them all.
Well, "good guy" is apparently code for some bad stuff, don't use that, Dung has made it clear he will not tolerate calling good people "good"...

Nope. What he's saying is you can say something sexit or racist without being sexit or racist. It's a great point and one that serves to make you feel less defensive. I think
Maybe people like you and grind want to feel defensive though.

You don't find it more than a simple overreaction? I mean, the sheer volume of people that seem to have settled on that particular word, "thug" (on Monday it was mentioned in the broadcast media more than any other day in the past three years), doesn't strike you as something more than conicidential?
