That is certainly true. I was talking about the time before the trial, when I think that very many members of London society knew exactly what Wilde's sexual interests were, as they did twenty years ago about those of the British 'personalities' whose child abuse is now being legally exposed, as is the approach of teachers to children in single-sex schools. It was the same with the death camps in Germany: people sort of know-and-don't-know as suits their personal interest. I agree that the majority of people who fought in the war probably weren't deeply concerned with slavery as such, any more than the soldiers who fought Hitler's Germany were not deeply concerned with Nazism and 'race'. Ultimately, though, the key issues come to the surface, and I doubt the War would have occurred if there had not been slavery as a bone of contention. Why else was the South so troubled about Lincoln's election?
