The Springfield Race Riot of 1908

Roberta Senechal,
Historical Research and Narrative

On the evening of August 14,1908, a race war broke out in the Illinois capital of Springfield. Angry over reports that a black man had sexually assaulted a white woman, a white mob wanted to take a recently arrested suspect from the city jail and kill him. They also wanted Joe James, an out-of-town black who was accused of killing a white railroad engineer, Clergy Ballard, a month earlier.

Late that afternoon, a crowd gathered in front of the jail in the city's downtown and demanded that the police hand over the two men to them. But the police had secretly taken the prisoners out the back door into a waiting automobile and out of town to safety. When the crowd discovered that the prisoners were gone, they rioted. First they attacked and destroyed a restaurant owned by a wealthy white citizen, Harry Loper, who had provided the automobile that the sheriff used to get the two men out of harm's way. The crowd completed its work by setting fire to the automobile, which was parked in front of the restaurant.

In the early hours of the violence, as many as five thousand white Springfield residents were present, mostly as spectators. Still angry, the riotersminus most of the spectatorsnext methodically destroyed a small black business district downtown, breaking windows and doors, stealing or destroying merchandise, and wrecking furniture and equipment. The mob's third and last effort that night was to destroy a nearby poor black neighborhood called the Badlands. Most blacks had fled the city, but as the mob swept through the area, they captured and lynched a black barber, Scott Burton, who had stayed behind to protect his home.

The next day began quietly, but at nightfall rioters regrouped downtown. The new mob marched west to the state arsenal, hoping to get at several hundred blacks who had taken refuge there, but they were driven off by state troops who charged the crowd with bayonets fixed to their rifles. The crowd then marched to a predominantly white, middle-class neighborhood and seized and hung an elderly wealthy black resident. After this second killing, enough troops arrived in the capital to prevent further mass attacks. Nonetheless, what the press called "guerilla-style" hit-and-run attacks against black residents continued through August and into September. Several more black homes were damaged, and a few blacks caught alone on the streets were beaten by small groups of whites. The riot's toll, for a city this size, was high: two blacks and four whites dead; hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of property destroyed; more than forty black families displaced when their homes were burned; and dozens of citizens of both races injured. Beyond the physical damage was injury to the reputation of the Illinois capital. The nation's newspapers carried many stories about the riot, and the name Springfield was associated in the public mind with corruption, savagery, and criminal blood lust.

this is the real history.

tell me why you don't know about it?

The Date Was June 1, 1921, "BLACK WALL

STREET"

The name fittingly given to one of the most

affluent All-BLACK Communities in America,

was bombed from the air and Burned to the

ground by mobs of envious Whites. In a

period spanning fewer than 12 hours, a once

thriving Black Business District in northern

Tulsa lay smoldering -- a model Community

destroyed and a major African-American

economic movement resoundingly defused.

The Night's Carnage left some 3,000 African

Americans Dead and over 600 Successful

Businesses Lost. Among these were 21 Churches,

21 Restaurants, 30 Grocery Stores and 2 Movie Theaters, plus A Hospital, A Bank, a Post Office, Libraries, Schools, Law Offices, a half dozen

Private Airplanes and even A Bus System.

As could have been expected, the impetus

behind it all was the infamous Ku Klux Klan,

working in consort with Ranking City Officials

and many other Sympathizers.

I would think that if you wanted to take about the real history, you would not use a cluster of misrepresentations about the event. Less than 50 people were killed, and that includes whites.

The riot began because of the alleged assault of a white elevator operator, 17-year old Sarah Page, by an African American shoeshiner, 19-year old Dick Rowland (the case against Mr. Rowland was eventually dismissed). The Tulsa Tribune got word of the incident and chose to publish the story in the paper on May 31, 1921. Shortly after the newspaper article surfaced, there was news that a white lynch mob was going to take matters into its own hands and kill Dick Rowland.[6]

A group of armed white men congregated outside the jail and, subsequently, a group of African American men joined the assembled crowd in order to protect Dick Rowland. There was an argument in which a white man tried to take a gun from a black man, and the gun fired a bullet up into the sky. This incident promoted many others to fire their guns, and the violence erupted on the evening of May 31, 1921. Whites flooded into the Greenwood district and destroyed the businesses and homes of African American residents. No one was exempt from the violence of the white mobs; men, women, and even children were killed by the mobs.

Troops were eventually deployed on the afternoon of June 1, but by that time there was not much left of the once thriving Greenwood district. Over 600 successful businesses were lost. Among these were 21 churches, 21 restaurants, 30 grocery stores and two movie theaters, plus a hospital, a bank, a post office, libraries, schools, law offices, a half-dozen private airplanes and even a bus system. Note—It was a time when the entire state of Oklahoma had only two airports, yet six blacks owned their own planes.

It was suspected by many blacks that the entire thing was planned because many white men, women and children stood on the borders of the city and watched as blacks were shot, burned and lynched. In addition, some of the black-owned airplanes were stolen by the white mob and used to throw cocktail bombs & dynamite sticks from the sky.[11] Property damage totaled $1.5 million (1921).[11] Although the official death toll claimed that 26 blacks and 13 whites died during the fighting, most estimates are considerably higher. At the time of the riot, the American Red Cross estimated that over 300 persons were killed. The Red Cross also listed 8,624 persons in need of assistance, in excess of 1,000 homes and businesses destroyed, and the delivery of several stillborn infants.[6]

maybe the people who lived there knew more about who was killed than an outside org like the red cross of the time

maybe the people who lived there knew more about who was killed than an outside org like the red cross of the time

Right away you just proved your original post had exaggerated the death toll from 300 to 3000--this puts a dent in the credibility of your version of the Tulsa race riot.

Moving away from Wikipedia, you could research actual history and estimates: Tulsa Race Riot Commission; the official report at the time of 10 whites and 26 blacks killed; and various other history. But the actual death toll is probably somewhere between the low end of 26 blacks killed and the high end estimate of up to 300.

Either number is a tragedy and a dark spot on this country, but the purposely inflated number of 3000 only causes the reader to roll their eyes at typical left wing propaganda and distracts from the real story and death toll.

back in 1929 they didn't have the same level of accuracy in these things did they.

But you sure could get a better number from the people who said "my uncle bobs family lived in that house and we have not seen them in 3 weeks"

bombed from the fucking air dude.

blocks and blocks of burned down businesses and homes.

who do you think spent months combing through the debree looking for black bodies?

how is OVER 300 saying that the other estimate is wrong?

isn't 3000 more than 300?

The most in depth report was done by the Tulsa Race Riot Commission; they raised to number of dead to up to 300. Your propaganda piece stated "The Night's Carnage left some 3,000 African Americans Dead..." You are now trying to spin your 1000% inflated death toll. The article you posted was not accurate, was full of propaganda, and you did not vet the article and its claims, and that is where you are. You have two options: the honorable choice of admitting your article was incorrect, or the dishonorable choice of continuing to attempt to spin your post and look for hairs to split.

how many unmarked graves are there in this area?

your go to move is to call the black people who survived LIARS.

fucking racist

and they say that there are unmarked graves huh?

the 3000 number was from families recounting missing people.

how many black people were in the Red Cross in the 1930s?

do you think there was not enough concern to dig up the graves and check?

do you think they met some white resistance at all levels?

and the ignoring resumes.

this gentle reader shows they are on the wrong side of history.

Hell they don't even KNOW the history

fucking racist

As I stated: You have two options: the honorable choice of admitting your article was incorrect, or the dishonorable choice of continuing to attempt to spin your post and look for hairs to split.

It was obvious which path you would choose. Why don't you take your anthropological prowess, go find unmarked graves, dig up the remains, identity who, where, and how regarding the deaths of the remains, and get back with me with some actual evidence and data. I am sure if you undertook this endeavor, based on your previous methodology of taking a number and increasing it by 1000%, you will report back that the number is actually 125,000 killed by the entire white citizenship of Tulsa while wearing white robes and hoods, flying the bi-planes, white robs flapping, dropping mini hydrogen bombs on blacks, seven year old white children brandishing automatic machine guns, mowing down fleeing blacks, while wearing their tiny white robs. While all of this was happening, your ancestor was standing on a hill, staff in hand, halo glowing against the darkened sky filled with the smoke of the burning black businesses and home, beseeching the white citizens to stop and sin no more.

Until then, the only in depth report and credible report on the number of deaths is 300.

how well did your numbers turn out asshole?

they said OVER 300 people were dead huh.

3000 is over 300.

do you want them to exsume the place and do a real count?
