In 2012 I was having a discussion with a black fellow, who was eager-beaver about voting for Obama again.
I said: "Why? If you liked the Obama of 2008, what's the attraction of Obama in 2012? The Obama of 2008 was going to cut the deficit in half, balance the budget, reform health care without an individual mandate, sit down with Iran and North Korea and fix the nuclear problems, close Gitmo his first day in office, cut taxes for 95% of the people, only raise taxes on millionaires, rebuild the infrastructure with thousands upon thousands of shovel ready jobs, roll back the seas, and all kinds of shit that never happened, and he never even tried to make happen.
"Voting for Obama in 2012 is basically the opposite of voting for Obama in 2008. So what is it about Obama that has stayed the same, that you still like?"

What about the self-loathing white conservative establishment, which is so desperate that they invoke God and the Bible in justifying the means to their end? They did it with slavery. They are doing it now, in their quest to destroy President Obama, even at the cost of the nation and the world economy.

Quite a lot of them I would imagine, but what in the world makes you assume this fellow was an "extremist"? If anything, he was a better informed Democrat than most, with a graduate college degree, who also liked a lot of things about Romney. His problem was like that of most Democrats; he absorbs information spoon-fed to him by the mainstream media and doesn't analyze it with a critical ear before accepting it.
I have never regarded Democrats as 'extremists' - they are just very-right-wing conservatives, in our terms, like your current President. Our problem is to explain the attitudes and behaviour of your Republicans. I am prepared to admit that some of them (including you, very likely) are activated by some strange archaic principles we don't understand, but most just seem manipulated crazies, eaten up with racism, mad religion and the urge to shoot people.
