New Jersey Sen. Frank Lautenberg passed away on Monday after struggling with health issues in recent months.

NBC News confirmed that the 89-year-old Democratic senator – the oldest member of the chamber – passed away from viral pneumonia that had sidelined him from the Senate for much of this year.

Lautenberg was first elected to the Senate in 1982, and served into that capacity through 2001, when he initially retired. State Democrats beckoned him back into public life, though, in 2002 following the withdrawal of their candidate during a competitive race.

Though Lautenberg missed a number of votes over the past few months due to illness, he did return to Washington for several high-profile votes. He made the trip to the Capitol in April for the Senate’s vote on legislation to strengthen gun control laws, and on May 16, he participated in a committee vote to approve President Barack Obama’s nominee to head the EPA.

The longtime senator was the last remaining member of the Senate to have served in the military during World War II, following the retirement earlier this year of Sen. Daniel Akaka, D-Hawaii, and the death of Sen. Daniel Iouye, D-Hawaii.

I think it's crazy that dudes like Lautenberg stay in office unitl they die. He was 89 years old. Anyone know 89 year olds? They're . . . well . . . old. Retire. Relax a while. Complain about everything and everyone.

Also, too, Senator Springsteen?

How sad. He was a champion of liberal causes. I think Christie will make a wise choice in his replacement.

Do you remember why they dusted off the mothballs on Lautenberg? It was because of the scandals of Bob "the torch" Toricelli. The dems were afraid of losing the seat so they dragged Lautenberg out.

Glad to hear he is worm food, the only way some of them get out is feet first.

Hope Christie appoints a hard line Republican,

Guess we will see what Christies true colors are

I have hesitated to drop by and comment except to groan a couple of inflammatory posts ... this poor man just died, for heavens sake, but I will say this in response to "Christie's true colors." If he chooses a moderate he will have shown himself to be consistent. Note that I said "moderate" and didn't specify D or R. Doesn't matter. And, by the way, a "moderate" would likely be to the left of me on many issues. I'm just saying that he'd be showing himself to be consistent if he chose a moderate. Now, time will tell.

I have to say that so quickly weighing in on who will replace someone who died, or applauding their death is appalling to me. I am so glad that I am not a politician.

QFT

I had forgotten about that. Poor old guy had to stay until he died.
